I am not surprised by those two numbers, but I wasn't sure about it to begin with. I figured the hardcore community of CS players would be hard to disappear even if CS:S is mostly better IMO.

I wanted some opinions from ATOT'ers. Also, Google searches I did are not coming back with the results I want.

I had a 3.92 when I applied to the school. 3.84 accumulative after two bad terms in Seattle (I hate this city). Got a 2.9 this past term (Loathe this city). 2.6 in a math class (important class) unfortunately. Bad professor, bad TA (Was afraid of the students), and then life going REALLY bad. Same can be said for all my classes except one. I had a great professor but I got a much lower grade than I expected. I don't even really know how that happened. I was legitimately surprised. I'd ask her, but that's not going to change my grade. :|

I don't know the requirements for your program but that doesn't seem that bad. I would think if you have a solid semester or two you'll be fine. You just need to figure out a way to fill your schedule before you get into your desired program.

3.92 is from community college, who cares. And you're getting average grades as an undergrad. Don't know something, talk to the TAs, Professor, other classmates. People are getting As in these classes, they don't make-up excuses.

Multiple majors? You can't even do well taking the intro classes. Worry about even getting into a single major.

- Students perform work to demonstrate competence
- Based on a normalized performance curve, a few earn top marks, the majority perform above, at average, or below average, and a few fail

You, it seems, performed worse than other students. It means others are smarter, worked harder, or gamed the system with more skill to demonstrate a higher level of competence in comparison with others.

Stanford, Cal, Caltech, UCLA, USC, UCSD are some of the better ones in the state.

This fall, some who had perfect 4.0 grades in computer science classes were turned down. It's so tight that one B in physics or calculus can get you rejected.

I guess the best way to go about getting good grades is to just learn the material. Treating it like a game won't get you top scores. Sure I got decent marks in most classes but I would have gotten more C's had I not studied for my finals.

For the OP I would say Cal Poly SLO or Cal Poly Pomona, I am considering those schools for Computer Engineering.

SLO requires decent grades, at least 3.3 or over is preferred. Pomona is less selective and will give you an education that is very similar.

I would avoid UC schools because they are super expensive.

I don't think that is it. I think it's laziness and/or lack of good professors. MIT has some pretty good professors from what I've watched of the online recordings of their lectures.

We have some pretty bad ones too. I would know, I hold 3 degrees from there. I assume you watched videos on OCW; those are generally good b/c only the well-liked lecturers get posted there. After a certain point you can do just as much learning from reading books/papers and then seeking out profs/TAs (or other profs, other smart students, etc.) to ask questions and mature your level of understanding.

Unless you go to a bad school or got unlucky with a particularly shit class, profs (and sometimes TAs) really do know the material. Some just require more prodding in the form of asking very pointed/specific questions.

edit: Oh, and UC Berkeley, Caltech, & Stanford are the best. I think LA, Irvine, San Diego, and the new one that starts with a M are solid "second tier" schools as well.

UW CS has also accepted people with 2.7 accumulative GPAs within the past 2 years. I don't really understand their process at all. The average is 3.6-3.7 for acceptance.
