I used to use the Mach 3 all the time, then I discovered the Bic 3 blade disposables (Bic Advantage maybe? Anyways they're blue with black on the handle) and they are hands down the best razors I've used.

The wife is in cosmetology school so I can expect some straight razor action in the near future!! Haven't been straight razored since I was in the Corps but man did it leave my skin smooth as shit.

I use a Gillette Sensitive Skin cream for my face and body wash for my sack. Used to use cocoa butter on my face which was shit hot but it clogged up my poors horribly and I had to go back to traditional creams.

Best shave hands down is a straight razor. Forget about paying 25-30 dollars for an 8pack of Fusion cartridges which shave worse.

Not really. A fusion or mach3 will get closer than a straight. Why? Well you know in the commercials where they show the 5 blades cutting through the hair, pulling it up, cutting it, and then letting it fall back below the skin? Yeah, that actually happens.

So when you shave with a fusion it manages to cut the hair below the skin level making your skin stay smoother longer.

However, if you shave like this, it gives you razor burn and ingrown hairs, or at least is more likely to.

I shave with a straight every day and really like it, and while it's smooth if I really take my time with it (with, across, against), it doesn't stay smooth as long as it would if I used a fusion and went against the grain. For normal purposes (with, across), the straight does a great job and doesn't give me any razor burn or ingrown hairs.

So after many years with my Gillette Mach 3 Sensitive Turbo razor, it has died (actually, it is my second one). I don't want 5 blades and hate electric; not to mention the ongoing expense. I am thinking about a DE Safety; especially after watching this guy:

Any recommendations? I shave once or twice a week, light hair growth. If I shave at the beginning of the week, I will have light noticeable growth at the end of the week.

I've used the Mach 3 since it was first introduced in the 90's...Mine doesn't get a lot of use nowadays... shave a couple of times per week during the warm months, but after the last week in August, it gets put away until March or April...

I'm in the "why bother" crowd myself.

For when I do bother, I find electric is the best shave, not because of quality, but because of speed/efficiency. Basically, the slight quality decrease is a tradeoff that's worth it for increased speed.

Maybe once a week I trim the neck area and the odd ball areas that get stray hairs, but other than that, full beard. At least in winter, in summer I go clean shaven.

I spotted an ebay listing for 50 Schick Xtreme (triple bladed) loose razors $38.50, free shipping back in 2010. They are individually packed in cardboard, evidently meant for promotion. Each lasts me around 6 months because I know how to keep them from getting dull (wash them thoroughly, dry thoroughly after use and store in dry location). They work very nicely until they get dull then I toss them. I shave immediately after taking a shower.

I have electric razors, I rarely use them. Even with new blade assemblies they irritate me and the shave isn't as close.

I never use aftershave. Hate the stuff.

Well, you're in Canada, which I think goes a long way toward explaining your behavior. I haven't seen a snow flake in over 50 years!

I had to shovel today. I was not going to bother as we only got a couple cm but it's suppose to rain soon so it would make a huge mess. The nice thing about the beard is it keeps me warm haha.

the question was "best" shave, not "most convenient" shave. either the poll is broken, or 3/4 of the people here genuinely think a Gillette shaves better than a barber's razor.

The idea of some man standing over me with a straight razor applied to my neck makes me nervous.

...uh, even if that man is me, TBH.

I still use a straight razor, but shave less and less every year. I've quit altogether til next spring, and I'll probably average every other week when warm weather starts.

My barber is a woman...and she wields a mean straight razor...but I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay someone to shave me.

Merkur 23C. Just make sure to not hold it tight by the sides really torque it down when changing the blade. The edges of the blades stick out, and while they're not sharpened you can slice your thumb pretty good. I made that mistake once.

The Personna blades worked great for me to start, but now after two years on the same box of 100 I think the blades have dulled a bit in the box. $11 in two years, I'm not gonna complain.

I bought an Omega shaving brush yesterday after the saleswoman assured me that it is the "choice for professional grooming." I was rather amused by the sales pitch given that I was sporting about a week's growth at the time (vacation is great). The brush smells like roadkill.

I have no idea. I've always used Mach 3. Bought a bunch of Harry blades like a year or two ago and though they were terrible. Back on Mach 3 and they work great.
