Best sho/hbo series?

Just watched Dexter 123 Back to back to back. It's the first pay TV series I watched and it rocked so i'm trolling for recs here -- I want more.

Dexter is better than all of them though, imo. I think the only show I like better than dexter is 'breaking bad', but it's on AMC. And it's awesome.

Entourage isn't really worth it any more but some of the earlier seasons were decent

Honestly though I think the best shows on TV overall are USA Networks shows. Burn Notice, Royal Pains and to a lesser degree In Plain Sight and White Collar.

Californication Season 1 was awesome. Not exactly a spoiler but the first season can be viewed as self-contained mini-series, where the season finale could have very well been a series finale. So even if you don't love it, you only have to invest in 12 episodes and you still get closure.

Season 2 was also good but not quite as great. Season 3 has felt like one big jump over the shark, continually trying to be more outrageous, revolting, unbelievable and explicit. The new characters that were introduced just can't compete with the great Lew Ashby from Season 2.

Weeds, I think, suffered a similar fate. It sucks you in in the first 3 seasons, the 4th was kind of interesting but you just know it's starting its downward spiral. The 5th season was just plain annoying and the lead character that you once loved just becomes a weak, annoying bitch. I honestly don't care about Season 6 (due next year).

I need to start watching Dexter. Saw some clips from Entourage here and there and I think that might also be an interesting show. What does ATOT think? Dexter, Entourage...or both?

Breaking Bad is amazing..I highly recommend Season 1 + 2 if you haven't seen it. Not on a pay channel, but many people haven't heard of it.

Deadwood and Rome on HBO. I put them in alphabetical order because I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. I only caught the last half of the last season of The Wire, but that looked to be one you wouldn't want to overlook.

I'd take that about Californication even further. You can watch just the last episode of the first season and you'll get everything that show has to offer. Its not a bad show, but they're not going to top that episode for impact on the viewer. Most of the episodes preceding it didn't even add that much (and I think that episode recounted what did anyways).

Dexter was stellar the first season, but now (ok season 2 and 3, haven't seen any of the newest one) feels similar to most other shows. The first one had this tension and creepiness to it that almost made you not want to watch, but you stayed glued to it.

Weeds was pretty entertaining the first season, but it really falls off, and there's too much junk to get the good parts in the later seasons.

The couple of episodes of United States of Tara were pretty good.

If you have Netflix, I recommend checking out season 1 of Party Down. It was on Stars.

There was another show I watched in the background on Netflix, not sure where it was aired. Its called Satisfaction, and is about a brothel. Was decent. It had about as much nudity/sex as Californication, but focused on several different characters.

Currently...definitely Dexter

Past series...it would be a toss up between The Sopranos and Rome. If it was just the first 3 seasons of Sopranos...it would defintely win...but it got a bit dicey toward the end. Rome was fantastic from beginning to end.

Edit: Forgot about Deadwood...fantastic series...but I think I would place it behind Sopranos and Rome.

Other than the ones already mentioned, The Tudors is also pretty good on Showtime.
