Best site for reasonably-priced quality whey protein?

I know there have been some pretty good websites allowing users to customize their protein powders and orders. I'm looking for some good whey protein isolate, but have been disappointed by the prices. I used to buy Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard, but that's $50 for 5lbs nowadays (used to pay something like $35 a few years ago with a deal). Anybody got any good websites where you can pick and choose based on protein quality (isolate vs concentrate), flavor, and price? Thanks.

Every where I look I cannot seem to find ON any cheaper than 52.99 for the 5lbs. Ive looked around quite a bit since that is what Ive been using for some time.

Yeah, that's terrible. Last I bought it was about 3 years ago and it was $45 or less. It's unreasonable as I can use milk, free range eggs, cocoa powder, and Splenda to make a shake. It costs less, I can control what's in it, and the free range eggs are higher quality protein anyhow (albeit a tiny risk of Salmonella).

Wholesale whey prices have sored the last few years. I remember getting 2x5lb tubs of Next Nutrition Designer Protein for $55 shipped from Vitaglo about 5 or 6 years ago.

I followed Pantlegz suggestion of Truenutrition.com earlier this year and have been using them ever since.

Truenutrition.com buy in bulk(16+ lbs) and use a 10% off code.

Yeah, this seems like the best option to me, but I don't have $150 to shell out on whey (only found 25lb options). Thanks for the suggestion - I'll keep the link for the future. As for now, I think I'll just try to find protein-dense foods that taste good in a smoothie. Sucks that the price has gone up so much.

Other sites- proteinfactory.com, proteinco.com (used to be allthewhey). proteinfactory is the oldest and most reputable. I haven't used atw/proteinco for ages and I don't know how well the company is holding up, and I'm just listing it here.

If you are not too bothered about the quality of the isolate then ON's gold standard is hard to beat at 5 for $50 - about $10/lb. I prefer the natural gold standard since it uses stevia instead of artificial sugars.

But if you want CFM whey (superior) instead of ion-exchange or ultrafiltered whey then proteinfactory.com has it for $12/lb. They sell WPC (concentrate) for $7-$7.50/lb and IMO there is little reason to choose isolate over WPC unless you are lactose intolerant or are a pro and need to get your diet down perfectly, and even then I'll take the CFM.

I've seen independent analysis of differing brands - the ones that are dominantly concentrate tend to have a higher heavy metal content (mercury, lead, antimony, etc). I'm not so into that whole heavy metal poisoning

smartpowders is legit. i've conversed with that owner many times in the past. supplier to quite a few supplement companies out there who decided to just start going it alone instead.

dpsnutrition i have used as well, but they carried a whey that had rat shit in it a few years back. brand escapes me.

never used the brand in question tho.

Long as someone can vouch for it. Isn't rat shit just extra protein with a little crunch?

Decided to go with the 10lb bag from smartpowders. Also got some Creapure creatine monohydrate. Considering these things will last me 4-6mo, it's not a bad deal. Thanks for the suggestions, gents. Made things much easier for me.

True but that was some time back and iirc it was bottled protein shakes that were over the limit for heavy metals and not straight protein powders.
In any case, PF has NZ WPC which is sourced from grass fed animals which is a safer bet against heavy metal poisoning.

Interesting. I'd still like to go with the whey protein isolate (mixed with WPC if necessary), if I can get it at a similar price (which I did). I do feel like it's treated a bit better and processed more thoroughly. Granted, there's not a whole lot of research out there on whey protein quality and such so I'm just speaking based off of logical preference. I appreciate your input though. I might consider a grass fed source in the future.
