I fired up SNES9x the other day and have been playing through the Zelda game (with major help from a walkthrough site), and have the weekend to myself. Figured I'd see what y'all like as the best snes game and to play it as I'm probably a few hours from beating Zelda.

Moved from OT.

Can't do one favorite. Impossible.

Final Fantasy II would probably be the closest if I had to pick one. That game is single handedly responsible for starting my JRPG addiction and is still my gold standard that JRPGs are judged against.

It's one of those games I wish I could forget so I could experience it again for the first time.

If you're really into SNES you at least need to get a Super EverDrive, Super PowerPak, SD2SNES, etc flash cart. Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Secret of Mana 2, etc on native hardware with unofficial English translations.

Next thing is a RGB monitor

Final Fantasy 2 and 3 (IV and VI).

Long, fleshed out story. Excellent animations. Plenty of bonus/side areas.

The only two games from SNES I regularly play.

Mega Man X. The movement in that one was just perfect. With a little bit of practice you could dodge/ evade pretty much anything. Fighting bosses was almost like a dance of sorts.

There was rarely a 'correct' weapon for any given situation. You could make many different ones work for taste reasons or added variety during replays.

I've beaten almost all of the Super Nintendo rpg games and super Mario rpg is my favorite. Played lufia 1&2, earth bound, final fantasies, chrono trigger. Didn't really play breath of fire series.

Super Nintendo is probably one of the greatest console ever due to a huge number of games that are not crap.

I was too young back then to judge what a good game was, and I've done too many drugs since to remember.

Where do you even start??

Chrono Trigger
Super Mario World
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3
Earthbound
Super Mario RPG
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma
Secret of Mana
Link to the Past
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2
Super Metroid
Super Castlevania IV
Mega Man X
Mega Man X2
Mega Man X3
Star Fox
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire II
Shadowrun
Demon's Crest

...and literally a couple of DOZEN others could be honorable mentions.

If you held a gun to my head and made me choose just ONE though, the nod still has to go to Chrono Trigger.
Still one of the best RPGs of all-time.

I agree with this +1000. The responsiveness of the character meant that you never died or succeeded due to crappy game mechanics or annoyingly delayed responsivity. It was completely due to your skill which was very rewarding. - BUT! - I will say that Mega Man X2 was the best. It was even more responsive and fun than X1 was. Better bosses and better upgrades too. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. X1 had the better story, but the story was the least important part of the game.

mega man 7, super metroid, mortal kombat 1 and 2 (3 is better on the mega drive because the sound is so much better), hagane, yoshi's island, fzero, ninja warriors, the adventures of batman and robin, super castlevania iv, and a whole bunch of other games. only the sega saturn has a better game library

This is a question that is nearly impossible to answer as the list would end up being a mile long. The snes, and the whole generation, was for the majority of people the pinnacle of console gaming.

You may very well want to narrow it down to a genre or style if you want something more definitive than a 500 game list.

If we just focus on you having a single weekend and wanting to be able to complete the game then maybe something along the lines of:

Super Metroid
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mega Man X/X2
Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3
Super Mario World
TMNT - Turtles in Time

This list will just keep going. You could spend 40 hours a week playing only the greatest snes games and would still have two years worth of games to play.

Chrono Trigger, but there are so many other good games. Nostalgia or not, the SNES remains my favorite console.

It's crazy how I can't write an extensive list for ANY system but when you go to a SNES? All of a sudden it's a goldmine.

Gaming really did get worse as graphics got better lol.

Edit: In fact this is why my PSP was my most used handheld ever. Access to the SNES emulator meant I spent hours playing through these games again. Only reason I'd ever pick up a new playstation handheld is if there was custom firmware and SNES emulator (no clue if this is even available on Vita never checked).
