Just started to replay this game again and i was wondering what the best sniper is. I played it a year or so ago and recall people saying the regular sniper rifle was really the best sniper rifle in the game.

It's been a long time, but I seem to remember I used the Gobi Campaign scout rifle due to the low spread and high critical damage.

Keep in mind, though: I'm not a min/maxer.

It really is a great game. I personally liked it more than Fallout 3. Thought the world was more interesting, the characters were more interesting, communities knew about events that happened in other communities, i liked how there was actual color (though i guess the east coast is more bland and the nuclear bombings were worse there), thought the factions were fun, enemies and environments better, weapons were more fun, etc. Fallout 3 was just...depressing. Not bad by any means, just depressing.

It's an open world RPG and the differences between guns is so small you can literally use a 9mm pistol for sniping. Enemies won't even appear until you get close enough to kill them with almost any gun. If you don't believe me then try starting a new game, run the big u-turn towards Vegas right away without getting side tracked and you'll see what I mean. Anything from a cowboy repeater to a trail carbine will do the trick and the only advantage of sniper rifles is they have scopes for better aiming.

Me too NV for me was the better version of Fallout 3 if not for what you said but also the ability to actually aim down the sights.

Thought I'd mention this: for the 2 perks you pick at the start, if you want to snipe, pick the faster firing perk, not the slower firing perk for extra accuracy. The reason is sniper rifles have such a low spread that the extra inaccuracy for the faster shooting perk is negligible.

last time I played it, I got to new vegas strip and around then my HD crashed. I never bothered installing it again as I lost all my saves. How much longer does the main storyline go after that.
I think I met the boss who's actually a giant computer.

Depending on what you plan on doing, since there are an almost endless combination of possible endings, you're maybe 1/3 done at that point. It also depends on how much running around you did before you got to the Strip. If you followed the main quests exactly and did nothing else, it might even be less than 1/3.

There are about 22 quests, some main, mostly side, that affect your ending sequence. Taking the time to get the ending you want for each one gives you probably 30-40 hours of gameplay if you want it to.

That list above includes finding all of the companions and finishing all of their quests, and resolving relations with just about every faction in some way or another, depending on which faction out of the 4 you plan on having be victorious.

Also, all the DLC is now out, so if you plan on getting it, there's another 30 hours easy. Some of it is high level, but not all of it. I recommend getting all of it, especially if it goes on sale again soon. Excellent stories there, even more so than some of the base game. I especially liked Lonesome Road, but Honest Hearts is pretty cool too. I haven't played Dead Money on any character yet, and Old World Blues was fun, but didn't seem as solid as Lonesome Road.

In the base game, the Gobi rifle is pretty decent because of the crit mods it has on it. It's also pretty easy to get to if you spoil yourself or already know where it is from another playthrough. The base sniper rifle isn't awful but I don't think it has any modifiers without adding weapon mods.

Ya I thought 3 was kinda depressing, then started adding the flora/tree mods and although it looks more like oblivion I find it rather enjoyable. Feels more like nature recovering

Isn't FNV a steamcloud game?

After you meet Mr House the real game finally gets started. Even if you just stick to the main quest you still have LOTS of work ahead of you.

The quickest way to beat the game is go see shit-for-brains at the Tops and kill him to get your Platinum Chip back. In the back of his bedroom is a little passage to Nice Guy or Happy Guy or whatever, the robot. Talk to him about taking Vegas for yourself. When he tells you to go deal with the various factions, tell him not to worry about them at all.
He will let you skip to the end battle very quickly.

I found the best sniping weapon was the named Carbine. The named Carbine has amazing damage and the scope worked well. I could two-shot regular Deathclaws before they knew I was there if I sneaked around.

I think that would be the All-American.
Found in one of the vault armories along with a bunch of other really nice guns.

I have nearly every single special weapon in the game, and for regular sniping YCS/186 cannot be touched in single shot power.

Best silenced sniper rifle = Sniper rifle with all upgrades

If you don't care about silence, the Anti-Material Rifle is best. If you have the Gun Runners Arsenal DLC, the Gun Runners have a special version of the anti-material rifle that is a little stronger because it can be upgraded with special add-ons you can buy from the Gun Runners.

Use armor-piercing or anti-personnel/incendiary ammo as you see fit, and note that damage increases as you go up in Guns skill.

Also, the best melee weapon is the Thermic Lance, followed by the GRA-version chainsaw. Both can't miss (hold down fire) and cut right through armor like it was butter.

Fallout Wiki is the best resource for such questions, but it really boils down to your personal favorites.

My favorite sniper rifle is the Cristine's COS Silenced Rifle. It is extremely powerful, and because its silenced you can get away with killing NPCs which you normally wouldn't.

But again its all very subjective. With right skills and perks the Anti Materiel rifle would probably do more damage, but when that sucker goes off, everyone and their mother will come running.

I too started a replay (but FO3) after the steam sale on all the DLC, never got it as i was long finished and onto other game by the time it came out. The fallout games are really great.. all this time and I still am enjoying every second, and its been long enough i have forgot most of it..

Some strange stuff.. Deathclaw in front of market (quest to get food and medicine earl y in game) I dont remeber that .. Deathclaw when i got pea shooters.. right in front of the store. Thankfully the raiders dented him enough i got lucky. And i dont remeber hte assasins being so brutally hard... I can kill supermutants easier (just the roll of the dice i supose)..

I WILL BE playing Vegas next (again also, picked all the DLC up for it too during the summer sale).

I enjoyed using the Ratslayer for low-level sniper rifle. You can pick it up at Broc Flower Cave near Camp Searchlight. It has 5x crit multiplier, so with decent crit rate, 1 out of 4/5 shots are crit hits. It also has silencer, night-vision zoom-scope, and extended mag (8 round instead of 5). Best of all, you can repair it with varmint rifle (dime a dozen) and uses 5.56, so super easy and cheap to use. The silencer + night-vision is ridiculously powerful combo in the outdoors at night time.
