best software for demo studio on ABS Mayhem G3 laptop

I'm a musician who is on the road for six weeks at a time and I am trying to figure out the best way to set up my laptop to record instruments via MIDI. I will use it as a demo type situation and have used Cakewalk and Mark of the Unicorn in the past. I also run music notation software. I am familiar with desktop applications but have just entered the laptop world. I have a 500 watt power inverter that runs off the 12 volt cigt lighter in my truck (a semi) which I will use to power my machine for the most part. This particular unit seems to have a power flaw and doesn't do well on the battery due to the power saving feature keeping the Athlon 64 3700 running at slower speeds when on the battery.

The unit is an ABS Mayhem G3 with 1gig of ram and the Radeon 9700 with CD burner

If there are any musicians or producers or engineers with experience using a laptop in a professional environment, I would really appreciate suggestions.

there's a fix for the clock throttling issue on the a64...forgot what it was called, i'm sure if u search under a64 stuck at 800mhz a few result should pop up
