A wedding photographer friend is in a nightmare scenario...losing work from multiple weddings that haven't been processed yet. What's the best software for recovering deleted and lost files?

(old 2011 thread)

I have only used Revo, and it works, but can take a while depending on how hard you need it to go. It really depends on the status of the drive, and the friend not doing any further writes on the drive.

What happened to the photos or the drive they were stored on?

I use GetDataBack quite a bit and it's worked well. Definitely worth the price. The trial version can show you a report of what can be found.

Also why isn't there a backup? If this person doesn't have a good backup system they need one ASAP.

I made the mistake of plugging in my 2tb drive into a router with usb support thinking this was as good as nas. The router corrupted priceless videos of dead pets I can't get back by turning the video files into folders of the same name. The only way I was able to get them back was Recuva. I used the free version and can't thank them enough, awesome software!

I wouldn't take videos of animals after they died, but that's just me. Then there is always the possibility that I misread your post. At any rate, glad you were able to get back what's important to you. Always happy to see free software doing amazing things!

If my wedding photographer has this happen to them before they give me my pictures, I will probably have to drown them in the ocean.

Nice. I find a great way to show appreciation when using the free version is to buy a license.

Since you were able to get them back, I don't feel like I'm throwing salt in a wound by pointing out that you "made the [second] mistake" of plugging your drive into the router. The first and even bigger mistake was not making even a single backup of those "priceless" photos... Hopefully correcting that first mistake was the very first thing you did after recovering them?

That always sucks, i used Recuva to recover my files on my external drive. But was kind of tricky because on win 10 i was unable to recover certain files but on win 7 it worked without a problem. Kind of weird but it's something to keep in mind.

I actually used Recuva's deep scan to make sure my data was gone from some USB sticks and a SD card. I used Ccleaner's free space wipe, didn't do jack! So I tried Eraser with DOD 7 passes, GONE! Recuva couldn't recuva.

Did you change the setting under "Secure Deletion" (above the "Wipe Free Space" section in the Options/Settings menu) to something other than than "Normal file deletion" before you tried to wipe that flash drive?

Oh, yeah, my mistake, I was thinking of the main settings screen under "Options":

but I see you did have "7 passes" set. Weird that Recuva was still able to get back your files after that, no matter what program did the overwriting. I wonder if there's an outright bug that prevents CCleaner from actually overwriting the space all 7 times or something? Did it take as you long as you'd have expected it to to overwrite the amount of space involved?

It is a good and easy recovery tool and capable to recover deleted files from hard drive. Not only for deleted files recovery, this data recovery tool can be applied to many data loss situations, like format recovery, virus attack, system crash, raw hard drive and more. With a data recovery tool, it would be easy and simple to get deleted back. For most cases, data recovery software can recover lost data after deletion or other reasons.
