There are great song intros. Sometimes the song is great also, usually not as good.
A list of some of my top picks:
- Hotel California (the only entry to be entered twice, the original and new 1995 live intro)
- Life in the Fast Lane
- Those Shoes (No Eagles bias, that's all)
- Gimme Shelter
- Money for Nothing
- Love Reign O'er Me
- Roundabout (thanks TLC)
- Won't Get Fooled Again (thanks to lxskllr)
- All along the Watchtower (thanks Stargazr)
- Baba O'Riley (strangely I thought it belonged, listened to it, thought it didn't, saw it mentioned by Chaotic42, listened again and it does)
- Freebird (thanks for reminder Myloxydian, meant to add, forgot)
- Smoke on the Water (so iconic it gets an exception to 'same as the song' issue, reconsidered after gaghalfrunt mention)
- Purple Haze (thanks prochargeme, how did I forget it)
- Whole Lotta Love (how was this off until now)
While this is a rock list per my tastes, a classical entry:
- Tochata and Fugue in D Minor (you know it, if not by name)
Leaving plenty of room for more to add.
Stairway to Heaven not listed as it's kind of a remarkable case.
Avoiding songs that are great but the intro is the same as the song.
Honorable mention:
Riders on the Storm
Oye Como Va
Hell's Bells
Baker Street
Voodoo Child (thanks to lxskllr)
Dream On
Black Magic Woman
Pinball Wizard (thanks to lxskllr)
Under the bridge (Ns1 also listed while I was considering)
Brick
Ohio
Funk #49 (thanks TLC)
Wish you were here (also reconsidered after Chaotic42 mention)
Stranglehold (thanks strangebrew1)
Sweet Emotion (thanks kidniki1)
She's so heavy (thanks prochargeme)
Crazy Train (thanks Spacejamz)
When the Levee Breaks (thanks blackdogdeek, though your name indicates a bias...)
Who Are You
Achilles Last Stand
Locomotive Breath
Walk This Way (thanks Sheikyourbooty)
Moneky Man (thanks Sheikyourbooty)
Layla (thanks Saylick)
Sweet Child O' Mine (thanks Schfiftyfive)
I don't want this section to get huge, but decided to add some in their own section where the intro is repeated in the song, some are very good.
More Human Than Human (thanks Golgatha)
Kashmir
Immigrant Song
Rhapsody in Blue
There's also a list of songs with great intros that are just too short - maybe a few seconds - to make the list. Like:
"Blinded by the Light"
Needle and the Damage Done
Southern Man
Tom Sawyer
Ticket to Ride
