Looking for the best bang for the buck... Music is more important to me than games, but mostly because a gunshot is a gunshot... so basically i want something well rounded? Hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance AT

I own a set of JBL Creature speakers (the white ones that Best Buy often has hooked up to an iPod) and Bose Companion 3 and can say the Bose speakers blow away everything I've ever heard. They cost a fortune, but nothing else I've heard even compares.

Ya, Bose has the best quality sound systems and gives a nice discount to MIT students so I tend to buy from them. Otherwise I use Creative speakers which sound almost as good for PC gaming and can be purchased for significantly less.

Saved for your posterity Jello You would think MIT students would know better...oh wait...Dr. Bose himself went there....that explains it

The two most musical sounding computer speaker sets I know of are the Altec Lansing FX6021 and the Klipsch Promedia 2.1, or possibly the Klipsch iFi.

Logitech would not be wise. Boomy bass + weak mids.

Bose would be..... unfortunate.

According to my upstairs neighbor, my Audigy 2 ZS Platinun with Creative 5.1 speakers puts out loud and clear, even though I never turn them up very high...they just resonate. Unless a person expects to update to DX10...which I do not, this equipment should meet anyone's needs or wants. I have no idea of what advantage that there may be with X-FI, nor will I likely ever know, since I will stick with this as long as possible.

5.1 speakers have no advantage while playing music. I don't see why you would recommend them.

Best speakers I ever heard were Bose. I mean, how can you beat instruments coming from every direction?

The best combo will vary from person to person. Many people will come say an audigy 2 ZS and xxx speakers are great, then somone else will come along and say ohhh well my $20000 speakers sound MUCH better and well... you see where im going.

I like my audigy 2 ZS and Z5500 combo, good for my light/medium gaming and also good for music. I would recommend you get an X-fi though as theyre newer and apparently are around the same price as an audigy 2 these days. If you play music AND game, i would reccommend a 5.1 system simply so you dont regret only going with two speakers later on, although two speakers can somtimes produce a higher sound quality.

Bottom line: Get an X-Fi and some logitech z5500's theyre reliable, sound good, cut themselves out if they overheat (as opposed to blowing/dying) and are pretty good bang for buck. Have a remote too!

You don't need to. However, while the Audigy will not output 5.1 with video DVD, and at least on my OS will not play audio DVDs at all, regular music CDs do put out on all 5 channels. Perhaps you don't care for the surround sound, but I do.

Game sound also puts out on all 5 channels.

You certainly should be able to get 5.1 working from a DVD

During the installation of the Audio Console, it specifically says that it doesn't support audio DVD in x64. Maybe it will when I get my MCE installed.

I ment most music.... Chances are the OP doesn't have a large collection of surround channel music (most people don't), he probably just has a bunch of MP3s (most people do), MP3s are only coded for 2 channels.

I could see how DVD-A could be an issue in x64, but I think you should still be able to get 5.1 from video DVDs.

I don't know anything about MP3, because I generally buy the music that I want locally. There is no special form of CD to get 5.1 sound, so all of my CDs work that way. In any case, neither I or you know exactly what any particular person has or wants, unless they say so.
