Which one works the best and won't filter out legit email? I'm also looking for one that I can tell my friends and family about, so it needs to be easy to set up. Note: I'm not interested in any that only work with Outlook.
Is Mail Washer still good? What about SpamPal?
I find common sense and a separate email for signing up to things work best. I rarely get spam (and if you have a Hotmail, do NOT publish your email) using Thunderbird. Even my "spam" email gets virtually none.
It isn't too difficult to set up but it does require a redirect of your current pop server to PopFile. You set this up in your email client. It works fine with anything that would normally call on the pop.mail.whateveryoursettingsare server. It takes a little training but it gets better over time. I've been using it for about 3 months and almost forget it's there. About 97% of all spam is directed to trash. It's not as easy as Spambayes but it is very similar.
For a download-point-and-click filter, Spambayes may be the better option but I like PopFile because it is allows a little more tweaking.
I'm more worried about legit email it would send to trash vs. a few spam it might send to the inbox. I know with my yahoo account, it sends about 2% of my legit email to the bulk folder, so I still have to read through the headers of all 100/day of them. Some of my family members just automatically empty the bulk folder with their webmail accounts, or never look in it.
Buy a $8/year domain, a $15 month server from idologic.com, get $10/month (family plan, 10 mailbox) spam and virus filtering from www.spamstopshere.com.
if you set up SpamStopsHere properly you'll get a tiny trickle of spam but zero false positives.
Family members don't need to install anything, and can use any mail reader including webmail.
I like Mailwasher. Sounds like the free spambayes is similar, altho Mailwasher will bounce spam if you want, sending 'undeliverable' messages to the sender, which is definitely helpful to some extent.
