Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 Text

Logitech Z-5500 Text

Has anyone had experience with either of these speakers? which do you advise?

I remember everyone on AT a while back saying that Klipsch is generally better for music while Logitech is better for gaming, would you say this still applies?
Do you disagree and prefer another brand? :Q

I recently got a set of Z-2300s. Nope, they aren't 5500s, but are similar. Anyways, the main problem is that the bass is as boomy as most people say it is, and the mid-range is lacking. From what I've read, which has all been true for me so far, all Logitechs suffer from these two issues. My old speakers stunk, but I could hear more instruments and sounds on those than I could on the Logitechs. Although, DVD sound is absolubtely amazing though. I've only heard good things (accuracy) about Klipschs, so I doubt you can go wrong with those (planning on them for my next set); they do cost way more though... But then again, it depends on what you are going to be using your speakers for, and the thing about Logitech = gaming/DVD and Klipsch=music works.

Also, if you want a better sound discussion, go to toms or sharky, they have dedicated sound forums (where I got/get most of my info).

I haven't heard either of those choices but I own a set of Logitech Z-560 (high-end 4.1) and have spent a bit of time with the high-end Klipsch 4.1.

First the Logitechs; they do tend to exaggerate bass a bit but I don't mind it as it's really only a problem at very high sound levels. But if you don't like you bass on the slightly heavy side that might be a reason to stay away. The full range drivers have a pretty narrow "sweet spot" so off axis response seems to be pretty terrible, but if you keep the sats aimed at your listening position its not a problem.

From the 10 mins I spent with the Klipsch I wasn't very impressed, not they sounded bad but I personally don't think they sound significantly different then any other multimedia speaker system. Maybe it was the horn loaded tweeters but the highs seamed a little shrill.

Generally I would say all these speakers share the same limiations.

Yep, from what I hear computer speakers are just computer speakers and can't measure up to bookshelves. Swan M200 are marketed as computer speakers but are actually bookshelves in 2.0. They don't produce sub 56Hz bass though IIRC.

Agreed. I like to hear things the way they were meant to be heard.

OP, keep the back of the Klipsch subwoofer away from the walls, make sure you give it plenty of room to breath from the back and sides, otherwise there's a good chance it'll overheat.

I got the logitechs after a similar set of questioning. The klipschs do have a tighter bass, and better mids. However, the z-5500 costs quite a bit less depending where you get it (40-120$), has killer connectivity optioins, very crisp sound, and a much better control device (that does look a bit tacky), along with much better sound options and better highs (IMO).
Klipsch connectivity options are terrible. Analog outputs. That's it. Nothing digital. If you use a mac (like I do) no surround sound.

Logitech has a massive set of connectivity options, and the setup is cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing.

The bass and mids sometimes hurt a bit for jazz, (bass gets a bit boomy, and piano especially is an issue to listen to, (for my Oscar Peterson albums I usually end up using equalizers within my computer).

Consider it this way. For music, I'd rate the klipsch at perhaps an 8.4-8.8, and the logitechs around 8-8.4.
The difference is pretty small considering the price diff, and the logitech offering is a great deal more flexible.

Also. consider if you want 2.1 or 5.1 for your computer. For example, Klipsch promedia 2.1 or Harman Kardon soundsticks II sound about as good, but are smaller and cheaper, though they obviously lack the surround capabilities.

Lastly, remember these are computer speakers. I use them for music, but if you are really focused on the musical aspect, towers or bookshelf speakers are infinitely better than 98% of computer speakers.

Hope this helps,

klipsch. keep the sats at a decent distance though. like so its not right next to your monitor so its a foot and a half from your head or something?? of course they would sound shrill lol, no one would do that for home theater for instance.

But if you have a PC with a sound card capable of DD decoding or the like, the digital aspect becomes a moot point. The OP has an Audigy 2.

I have had my Klipsch 5.1's since the first year they came out. They now have an ultra edition, which I have due to a FREE warranty replacement that wasn't even a warranty issue (I let klipsch know that and they STILL replaced them for me) . Thier customer service is great and so is thier product.

I honestly haven't heard a computer speaker that is as crisp and clear - let alone LOUD and distortion free as the Klipsch PM 5.1s. I promise you will NOT be disappointed with them.

 I always laugh when people describe a system as LOUD! Yeah it's gonna be loud if you turn the volume up too much.

I had the Klipsch Promedia 5.1. They sound Awsome, but after about 2 1/2 years the amplifier in the subwoofer died, rendering them useless.

I hope they have improved the quality of the components since then, but around the time mine died, I noted several other users complaining of the same or similiar problems.

Best speakers for performance?

The ones that are not marketed as computer speakers. Do yourself a favor and get a receiver/amp and some real speakers.

Obviously MM speakers dont measure up to bookshelf/home theater speakers but as for the 2 speakers the OP posted, I'd say their practically even so just go for the cheaper set. Beware though that there is a pretty rampant problem with the Klipsch's and their amp blowing out.
