Are you looking for a 5 or 6 speaker set, or a more traditional 3 pc set? I game, but mostly I care about my speakers ability to sound good playing music, and for that the 3pc system gets you more for your money.

I just bought the Altec Lansing 2100's - they have an insane retail but the street price is running under $100. They use microdrivers in the satellites like the Apple "stick" speakers, and they sound incredible. The subwoofer's all wood and it also produces great sound. They filled my living room so full of Red Hot Chili Peppers that my friend and I had to scream to hear each other. That was still under the distortion threshold (they could go louder, but not without some distortion).

I was looking at the Altec 621's which are even nicer and more conventional, but I had to divert some cash to the vid card (I'm building from scratch right now). Plus, as it turned out the 2100's had more power than I needed.

If you like to crank up that volume then get the Z560's. If not, get a digital one from creative.

For under $200, the Logitech z560's can't be beat! I saw them just the other day for $128.95.

Another vote for the Logitech Z560. Have tried them many times and feel they are the best sounding speakers out there for under $200. Computer speakers that is.

The day I can get a pair of Mackies for under $200 would be the happiest of my life. But it does bring out a good point. If by computer speakers we assume gaming speakers (seems reasonable to me), then logitech, klipsch, etc. are all great. The demands for music speakers are very different. Game soundtracks use a lot of sharp transients at high SPL. They can kill audio speakers if you're not careful (I speak from personal experience). But really no one notices distortion.

Distortion doesn't have to mean bad sounds. A little of it probably makes the game more exciting, but it sucks for music reproduction.

If all you cared about was music quality, you could get a much better pair of speakers designed for home audio or low end studio work. They would be far more musically accurate, but might not have the high volume punch for gaming.

Before you jump the bandwagon I'd consider a different alternative.

For $199 you can get the Diva Swans M200 at http://www.av123.com/

They are made with MDF and long throw drivers to give tight bass without the need of a boomy sub. They don't use lightweight resin satellites like most multi media speakers, but weigh 30lbs a pair.

They are for audiophiles who want their speakers to produce an accurate soundstage for stereo music.

I was just sick of listening to Klipsch promedias and Altec Lansing ACS56 so I went with a parasound amplifier and JBL S38s. If I didn't take the expensive approach I would have gone with the divas.

Altec-Lansing 641's if music is important to you. Logitech Z-560's if music is not important AND price is your most important factor.

I just went through a major shopping expedition for speakers in this price range. Got it narrowed down to the 641's and the 560's. I ended up with the 641's, and they are incredible. A couple factors made me spend the extra $35 that the 641's cost - here's a rundown on what I found and my personal opinions (pros and cons are specifically comparing 641's vs. 560's, not other speakers or on an absolute scale)-

Z-560 Pros:
1 - less expensive (135 vs. 170 approximately)
2 - small, attractive satellites
3 - smaller bass unit box size

Z-560 Cons:
1 - sloppy bass (lots of it, but not very well defined)
2 - nonexistant midrange (poor blend between bass unit and satellites)
3 - really flimsy remote unit (knobs feel like they are mounted in Jello and ready to fall off, also unit tips over really easy and looks cheap, plus no markings on knobs and no treble control)
4 - bass unit looks like a toy
5 - questionable build quality (looked at 5 stores, the 560's were broken or failing at 5 of the 6 stores - doesn't really inspire confidence)

641 Pros:
1 - tighter, deeper, more accurate bass
2 - good midrange response and far, far, better blend with woofer
3 - more accurate-sounding highs (less artificial "sizzle")
4 - excellent, heavy remote with optical control knob (doesn't fall over, come apart, and no chance of noise, ever.)
5 - outstanding build quality (parts and controls just have a very high quality "feel", construction looks like it will last forever, looks very expensive)
(edit) 6 - forgot to add - sounds better at low volumes!

641 Cons:
1 - costs a little more
2 - satellites are sort of big (about 2x the Logitech's)
3 - bass unit is gigantic (about as big as a mini-tower PC)
4 - I don't really care for the very dark blue color of the enclosures, but it's pretty close to black...

BTW, I have listened to the Swan's M200 and the Altecs make them cry. No comparison whatsoever - the Swan's sound good but the Altec's sound better. The M200's weigh just under 30 pounds for the pair - the bass unit alone for the Altecs weighs more than that, the whole system weighs 56 pounds, as if that really means anything!

The short story is that the sound and the looks of the Altec 641's would be suitable for a "grown-up's" living room, the Z-560's would be more at home in a dorm room. Both can blow your eardrums out, but the 641's sound better for music and seem like they can take a pounding much better than the Logitech's.

i'm going to buy the Altec Lansing 641's if they truly are the best. However, the 0.3% distortion at -10dB has me a little worried. I love listening to music.
