So i hear the sandforce SSD's are the best, is this true? i thought intel had the best performance or is that not the case anymore?

Im looking for a SSD for my computer in sig. I want it to be the fastest SSD there is. I dual boot and want it strictly to speed up boot times. It needs to be 60GB or so, enough to have my Vista and Ubuntu installs(currently taking up 35GB) If i can find a way to shrink my Vista install i might be able to get away with a 50GB drive but dont want to run our of space, and what to keep the swap file on the SSD. So what am i looking for.

ok best within reason, i saw that review wish i had the cash, and ill bet that actually wouldn't boot that fast because ill bet it has to load the card bios just like a raid card, so a SATA SSD would probably boot faster.

Well, when the 80GB Intel G2 goes on sale for $190 I'd say it's the "best within reason".

thanks!

That was my original plan but i kept hearing the sandforce drives were better, but they are more expensive as well. Guess it comes down to if the extra speed is worth it. Think i might wait for a G2 to go onsale.

The Crucial C300 is actually faster than the SF drives if you have a 6Gbps SATA channel for it.

I do not have SATA 3, i could buy an adaptor i suppose. I'll look into the benchmark/price of the C300

This review had the new 100gb vertex2 drives (sandforce) booting up quicker than the intel G2 drives. The boot up time difference is about 2 seconds.

mwave is currently having a sale, 120gb vertex2 for $310 after rebate. Pretty sweet deal.

i was in the same boat as you a while ago.

My advice... TRIM is worth it, from what im reading, so get a trim ready drive.

The fastest i heard is the C300's.
However they are kinda buggy.. firmware wise, as you can see on anand's reviews.

Zap told me you cant go wrong with intel if your truely lost.
And the 80gig X25-M isnt bad.

Id save up a bit more and get a 160gb.

Im currently on 2 x X25-V's for a total of 80 gig (OS Only)... and windows 7 ultimate with all the bells take ups about 40% of it.

You can't go wrong with Intel. The C300 has had its speed bumps and apparently is still trying to settle in with new updates. The OWC Mercury Extreme Pro RE is a more expensive drive and yet to be discredited anywhere with its 28% over-provisioning. Its claim to fame is not only one of the top performers but it has 28% over provisioning and some specific firmware that counters performance degradation as the SSD fills or ages.

It is going for a bit more but if you want the best with respect to capacity and performance...you might want to consider that with the Intel you will only hit a certain point in capacity before your performance drops yet it seems that only with the OWC is that point 'when full'.

the intel G2 is the fastest that had all the bugs smoothed out already. (every drive had bugs on initial release, even the intel's).
Currently the sandforce are indeed the best performing drives... for now. They just recently claimed the title and they will not hold it long (the next indilinx controller comes out in Q3 this year, and the intel G3 in Q4 this year... and in Q3 mass production of 25nm MLC chips will begin)

Owner of 256gb C300, 50gb Vertex LE and 256gb Samsung PM800 drives here... You will likely not notice any difference in these drives in most real world use. The main difference is in benchmarks. Now if I were transferring many GB's at once the C300 375mb transfer rate would kill the 220mb Samsung rate, but outside of that all 3 are awesome for everything I do.
If you are getting a smaller drive like a 50gb or 100gb, the Vertex 2 or LE is the choice for the higher write speeds. The Samsung lower GB drives start to suffer in write speeds as do Intels.
I see the C300 get a lot of bad press, but it really is a great drive. Mine meets and exceeds all advertised claims. That said so does my Vertex LE coming in at 285/275, same as the Vertex 2.
Now Intels next generation SSD might make things interesting...
