Best sub-$100 MP3 player for grandparents?

My grandmother wants to buy my grandfather an MP3 player. She said that the cheapest she found an iPod for was $100 (the low-end Shuffle I am assuming) ... and that $100 was too much.

He does workout for 2 hours/day, and would like to be able to listen to tunes while doing so.

So, what should she get for him? Storage > 1GB please.

I don't know. I was boggled when my mom said that my grandmother expected a good MP3 player for sub-$100 at all.

I don't think they make mp3 players with those specifications, at least not reliable ones. Your best bet is to subsidize the cost of a better mp3 player and just tell them it was <100.

That is already established. But what other player has a screen, 1GB, and is still sub-$100?

Keep checking the site for the refurb shuffle's to come back in stock. 512MB ones were $31 last I remember, I forget how much the 1 gigs were but it was pretty cheap...under $100. You can also call your local Apple store and ask what refurb stock they have in.

The new Shuffle is awesome - 1gb inside, clips to your clothing. I'm getting one for Christmas specifically for working out. iTunes is very easy to use and can manage your existing MP3 collection.

If not that, then an iPod since iTunes does make using your existing CD collection painless.

I'd say get him a new shuffle and don't tell him it's 1GB. Simple and easy to use.

If he's insistent on >1GB, there are routinely deals on the Sandisk e200 series, last one I saw was the e260 (4GB) for $90 AR. I have the 6GB and love it.

Personally, I'd never get a non-technical person anything other than an iPod if they asked for an MP3 player. They're the totally dominant brand at this point, and many people simply assume that they're getting an iPod for Christmas if they asked for an MP3 player.

I've been out Christmas shopping, so I have a better idea of what's available.

The new 1GB Shuffle seems perfect for him. It is tiny, it doesn't have a screen too tiny for him to read, and it shuffles! Are they $80?

I totally agree with ultimatebob. The 1gb Shuffle clips on, doesn't have a complex screen or menu system, and yes, it Shuffles. All for $80. The software is easy to use and you can buy more songs for a dollar. I too would definitely recommend an iPod to any non-geeky person.
