I haven't found an editor I really like yet, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I'd like it to have syntax colour coding and proper indenting for code, especially C/C++.

Thanks

I forgot to add that I'd prefer it to be able to run in X since you get the advantages of tabs and stuff like that.

Ok, I'd recommend vigor, but that would be evil.

You could open multiple xterms. That's better than tabs because you can view two at one time. I don't know much about text editors though.

Not sure if borland's products run in *nix, but I've used C++ Builder and more recently, JBuilder, and really like them. They're like VS.NET but with on-the-fly compiling and it's free for educational/personal use. Might want to check out PrimalScript, too, in case it runs on linux. Supposed to be very good.

use vi ... learn to use it, there is a larger learning curve than most, but once you learn it, you wont use anything else

vim + screen = stateless text editing. Close out a terminal and open it up in a different part of the world and it will be left exactly as you last used it. Also you can use to proccess applications in the background and return to them later if you'd like to log off and log back on to your computer. I use btdownloadcurses that way. Also nice for when your compiling long programs and don't want to leave a window/terminal open without your supervision, or if your like me and have a nasty habit of closing out windows without looking at them.

gvim for a GUI text editor.

try a vimtutor command for a introduction to vim.

Otherwise there is also Emacs. It's a nice editor, but I prefer Linux as a operating system.

Then there is lots and lots of other styles of editors and most Windows editors either have a Linux version or will run in wine if you already have a favorite.

A sorts of fun stuff

kwrite, or kate...I have never used kate but here it is very similar to kwrite, I seem to do all my programming in kwrite and vim, but kwrite is definitely my favorite.

Netbeans can be use for both Java and C++.
For C++, you can just download a plug-in, and it'll highlights all the syntax for you.

Kate and Gedit are nice. I like Kate a little better b/c of its file browser on the side. And its got a highlight mode for makefiles.

Thanks for all the suggestions I've used emacs and kate before... I don't mind either of them all that much but emacs is a bit too arcane with commands... the only thing I don't like about kate seems to be the indentations are so large

I'll 2nd that! Although I haven't used it with Java, since I don't do Java.
