damn I must be sleeping..how did this thread get by me...lol....

Actually as my friend aigomorla stated-- YODA~~~ where are you ?????

He should be commenting about this thread soon...

B4 he tells you it doesnt make any difference, lemme just tell you, whatever makes you feel better, go with it.

If AS5 makes you feel better, use it. If AS Ceramic is your choice use that instead.

IRLA TIM's play very little role in differences. At most 2-3C if you compare the high end uber expensive TIMS with the generic white goop you get.

So just use what you like. Personally i hear zalman is pretty good due to its applicator brush. I personally use AS5, and i will for a while because i have a hugh vile of it.

Forgot to add, MAKE sure you use one tho. Theres a Big difference between not using any TIM and using one however.

AS5 at one time was the best......but there are many thermal compounds and thermal pastes that are as good or even better than as5........most if not all will give you temps that are in the same ball park no matter what thermal paste you use...

Personally I like the Zalman ZM-STG1 .. http://www.zalmanusa.com/ then click on Optional products...

Personally I would stay away from the Coolabs Liquid Pro!! It is highly corrosive and if used improperly will destroy equipment. It is not that much better than other Theermal compounds. Plus once it settles in its a real pita to take off or remove your heatsink if need be!! Mainly because it bonds like super glue to the metal.

Most people on these forums just will not be careful enough to use this product.....
The Zalman thermal paste is par excellence in terms of everything!!

As was stated earlier use what you like.....but remember there are some cheap thermal pastes on the market...but most of the time top of the line heatsink manufacturers ship a very good quality thermal paste with ther heatsinks!!

I would agree that Liquid Pro is dangerous to use. A few people have commented that Zalman STG-1 has a high concentration of oil that will cause its performance to degrade more quickly than other TIMs, but I have yet to see any examples of that problem made manifest.

That site has not been updated since 2002.......but even back then there was some concern about what is called or labeled the best....
For what? a few degrees celc ius difference.....

Anyways my point not withstanding in 2007 there are many good thermal compounds on the market..... Good Luck!!

Well I had to rush the purchase since the DFI Ultra-D's chipset cooler died while I was using the computer last night. Its a funny thing to see when you see your Nf4 chipset cooler go from 35C to 50C then to 60C then when it was moving up I slammed the reset button and powered down. Needless to say, I took a very big fan and booted in safe mode went over to our guys @ SVC. and purchased the AS5 and the Evercool VC-RE. I was going for the zalman but they were all out. Plus it seemed people said AS5 was on par with the ceramique.

I have and use Coollaboratory Liquid Pro and it works really well probably the best out there.
Its not really all that hard 2 handle and apply as some people have said.

But I would really like to say that you shouldn't be using it on a cooler that has any aluminum at all.

To be honest this stuff eats thru aluminum so fast I wouldn't suggest a cooler that has ANY aluminum.

Even the tiniest drip that comes in contact with any aluminum, will turn the entire thing black and weaken it.

The reaction isnt as violent as you say, at least it wasnt when i tried it on my old whisperrock 4 radiator, it took a day or soo to corode a bit of aluminum, but when you add water to the mix it reacts bloody fast.

it seems to me like ceramique works better when u need to use a bunch... just my experience...

has anyone else noticed that some of the ihs's on the a64/x2 chips have been a little concave?

the radio shack stuff "works" ... couple of degrees diff except in extreme situations

the problem with the cheaper compounds is that it dries out.

--fortunately my cheapie Prescott TT cooler came with the AS5 preloaded for my P4 3.4 EE @3.71Ghz

i just took 80% of it off ... they leave it way too thick

Does the Zalman product have a shelf life? IIRC, the AS5 needed to be stored in a refrigerator if it was not going to be used for awhile to keep it "fresh".

The users that care about thermal compounds are likely not using aluminum heat sinks. Even OEM HSF's have copper bases these days.

Coolaboratory Liquid Pro performs the best according to "most" reviews.

I got some shin-etsu x23 for my new setup, but found it difficult to apply (it's very thick). I've gotten pretty good at getting a good application of AS5, but does anyone have any tips for some of these thicker compounds that don't spread too easliy?

I think most peoples problems are how much to apply to the HS and CPU. I would explain how to do it myself... but I am not as technical and perfect as other people so I feel I will leave that job to you since you explain it so much better than myself. Not that I do not know how to apply it that is but the amount is always better left explained by you. Get what I am saying?

don't spread it...put a thin line or bead and mash the HSF down to it and twist it slightly to spread it that way.

That's how I apply AS5 (never spread it on a CPU with IHS).

Its good practice as it also helps release any trapped air, this ultimately improves the heat transfer as air is a poor conductor of heat.
