Piratebay was having some trouble, and there's been a virus scare- I'm staying away.
Demonoid sucked and still does. I find a few things here and there that might be on the tracker, but otherwise it's generally shitty.
Private invitation only trackers are the best.

The best torrent sites, i.e., Pirate Bay and Minininova are either shutting down or going legit.

The best of the rest are isohunt and btjunkie. For torrent searches, torrents.to and torrentscan.com. For new scene releases, rlslog.net. For TV shows, eztv.it.

I'm not going to get into the morality or legality of file downloading. That's a subject for OT.

Also be aware that most of these sites are infected with popup viruses like Antivirus2009. Use a non-administrator account when browsing these sites and a good av program. Microsoft's Security Essentials is very good at catching and deleting these.
If you do encounter one of these popups DO NOT click on it. Use Task Manager to close the application.

Ya, the ads on the site will nuke your computer, but don't worry about installing software shared on the sites those are just fine. If your antivirus freaks out on any of those applications, don't worry its just a false positive.

This is kind of an old thread so I garauntee someone else owns the OPs computer by now.

how safe is it downloading from Thepiratebay if you have peerblock running for W7?

Peerblock is essentially an IP blocker not an AV program. With IE8 I have not seen it stop those pop-up viruses or block those annoying pop-up ads that plague the torrent and torrent search sites.
That's why I use Firefox with Adblocker Plus and a non-administrator account when browsing these sites.

You also have to set Peerblock to allow HTTP to connect to TPB.

I only run Peerblock with utorrent to try and keep Verizon from warning me that I am downloading copyrighted material.

That's what I'm askin, will verizon see what I'm downloading with peerblock.

Verizon doesn't care. If somebody under the hire of media companies, or their investigative contractors sees your ip address, they may contact Verizon, who will in turn contact you. Verizon doesn't care until they're made to care.

so will peerguardian block out all those media companies that care?

Maybe, maybe not. Your odds of them seeing you are greater if you're getting the latest movie, than a CD from an obscure group from the 60s. PeerGuardian's reactive. That means the companies could be using certain ip ranges before PeerGuardian has definitions for them. Also, there's nothing stopping them from sitting at home and joining a torrent. Your ip address is available to everyone within the torrent.

This is true. The RIAA has gotten Verizon to agree to send, phone, email notices to their customers that the RIAA and their henchmen have found downloading copyrighted material.

A Verizon spokesperson told CNET that Verizon would discontinue service to those who were repeatly warned, but in a later interview Verizon admitted that they had yet to do so.

Private trackers are by far the best. Just remember to keep your ratio up and you'll be fine (i keep mine at 4:1). I'm trying to get an invite to TL, SCC, and revtt. I use demonoid, Supertorrents and others.
