best vacuum for pet hair

I have a 100 lb chocolate lab that I wouldn't trade for a million bucks. His hair, on the other hand, I would pay to get rid of.
I'm looking for a vacuum cleaner that'll suck the paint off a bowling ball and not clog within a second of use.
Any recommendations?

For pet hair in carpet and on upholstery, you will need a vacuum with a beater bar brush.

I find a small handheld with a beater bar brush is best for stairs and upholstery. I've had a Dirt Devil hand held for years that still works great.

For your carpets, any high rated carpet vacuum will do.

For hard floors, find a cordless stick vacuum. It's nice to have something you can just grab and use.

I saw the 'Animal' Dyson, but $500!! Is it really worth that?! That just seems so expensive.

I've tried little units here and there, and they don't even come close to doing the job. The best thing so far has been a shop vac (this is on hardwood floors.) But the shopvac was too large to keep indoors.

LOTS of suction is required, I like to drop it behind the bed and have it suck up all the loose hair.

you can cut down on the amount of animal hair around the house if you just wipe the dog down with a damp cloth once a week.... twice a week when they lose their summer/winter coat. You will still have hair around the house, just a lot less of it.

The dyson works very well. The key is that it's bagless so you can empty it as needed and as they claim, it doesn't lose suction.

The animal attachment is just a part that clips on to the end of the hose so you can do stairs and harder to reach places (furniture, etc). The only unique part is that it has a 'brush' that moves like a regular vacuum only it's part of the attachment.

So, having owned the Dyson for about a year now, I'm very happy. However, the belt is not user replaceable, it has a ratcheting system that alerts you to when it's having trouble which requires you to clean out the rollerbrush assembly. I have to do that every other time I use the vacuum.

I've had to clean the animal attachment thing once so far, as it stopped spinning efficiently. That was not a user-maintenance type activity, and it took me awhile to figure out how to disassemble it to clear it out.

Outside of that I'm very happy and I would buy one again if it lasts a few more years.
