I have a LG G Pad 8.3 (it's the Verizon model and there are ROMs for it, I have CM on mine).

It's a nice tablet, the Snapdragon 600 still seems fast enough, especially with CM installed on it and the GPE will be fast as well.

Not sure what you paid for it, but I still probably would have picked the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 that Best Buy has on sale this week for $250. I'm half tempted to sell my G Pad 8.3, return my Nexus 9, and buy that Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4.

Just to put this to rest and to justify my purchase even though its not necessary; The Samsung 8.4 was killed with taxes as I could almost get a new one online with what taxes cost in my state. Also the LG Gpad came with a SD card, case and back cover protectant, which I would have wanted to buy with a Samsung tablet, then I would have had to rooted the Samsung. Also it gives me an entry point with getting into Android on the tablet side without breaking the bank. i looked hard at the Samsung 10.1 pro, but not having the snapdragon was a deal breaker due to reading it would be harder to root. Unsure if it was the best decision, but it was a decision that made financial sense at the time. I had almost talked my self into getting another Ipad with the Ipad air, but had already made the decision to move away and had to stick to that decision. Apple does so many things right on the hardware side, just wish the software was different at times, but guess one can't have it all.

If I were to get an android tablet today, I'd get an Nvidia Shield tablet for one simple reason: it can stream PC games.

Otherwise, not a big fan of android on the tablet. It's kind of surprising to me that this is so, since flexibility on a larger screen would make sense since it is more like a PC then. But it just doesn't work all that well.

Would the Tab Pro 8.4 for $200 be the best value for an all-around tablet? I'm looking at tablets for general usage scenarios; web browsing, social media, occasional media consumption...as well as viewing photos in the field.

While a laptop would provide more power and options for photos, the screen resolution of a tablet is far greater and the battery life is better, and I have a portable charger if needed.

For 200, you can't go wrong with it. I have bought one my self and so far am quite pleased with it.

only 1 rom for the Verizon model, and LTE data doesn't work... i blame that developer for being lazy

yeah, $200 is a good price for the Tab Pro 8.4.... an upgrade would be the Tab S 8.4 @ AMOLED & slimmer/lighter, at $300+

Well the ipad mini 2 16gb has got down to the price a couple times through the pre black friday deals. If you're not opposed to iOS, that would be a better deal, but the 8.4 pro is a very good value IMHO. Same basic specs on my phone other than screen size and it works great.
