Looking for good clear values (the point where price and quality/features meet)...Im hoping there are some standouts. I cant afford what I want and I dont think its worth trying to repair my car (I just got a new tranny in it and the head gasket blew out).

Something reliable (Im hoping to get near $1K/yr [$10K for 10yr life]...my car cost me 500$/yr) that gets REAL gas mileage but has respectable performance (Id LOVE an electric...fits my driving style. Id just have to run an extension cord out the window). Ill punch you in the face if you tell me a 75hp four banger gets good gas mileage, having to keep it redlined all day sucks gas like mad (unless thats changed). I had 210hp V6 on 87 octane (250hp with 89) and got 22/28 mpg city/highway (30mpg with the mid grade, I ran it every other tank [it was the "reccomended" grade]). I wont accept anything worse than that.

150hp with 40+mpg would be an acceptable trade. I find it sad that a hybrid only gets 33% better gas mileage than my car with twice the power size and weight (and they cost a lot, before even considering whatever strange maintainance they probably need). Im only going for a hybrid if they get 60+ mpg highway. Im hoping actual engines have improved over mine (its ~15 years old). I drive probably 4-5 miles city 8-10 miles highway on my trip to work right now (rarely can set cruise on the way there, but coming home at night I can...unless I can afford adaptive cruise control).

I will say I much prefered my infinty sound system to my freinds old ford focus sound system. Maybe thats a deciding factor all else being equal. I do currently work a night shift (have for 4+ years) and have HID headlights for that reason. So I probably do need decent lights, unless I can yank my set out and move it over (I dont recall the size). Oh, automatic might be a requirement...driving a manual out here is freakin nuts. To many idiots and stop lights (yeah Im lazy).

I know there are a few new cars that actually fit in the budget, and some older "luxury" cars as well. I really have no idea what to look for. I am paying cash, so price is an important factor...max is $15K, but really only if it gets me a noticeably better car than like $10K (or if new is the way to go). Like I said though, I really have no clue...Ive only had one car and never looked at any others (I really liked my car). In my searching I only found two Id consider a real replacement for mine and both are out of my budget. That leaves the rest of the entire new/used car market and thats just to vast for me to try to look through with no currently running vehicle.

So any help is greatly apreciated, thanks in advance.

I don't know what you're babbling about but.... Why not get a Civic or a Corolla? Those can get like 40mpg on the freeway and have decent power assuming you go with a manual transmission. The automatics are slow pokes but get them in manual and I doubt you'll be complaining about performance.. Pretty much any corolla or civic made since 92 (civics) 93 (corollas) would be suitable though the older corollas tend to be oil burners. A civic with 104hp and a manual transmission is capable of pulling a 0-60 in about 8.5-9 seconds which is plenty fast.

i was ready to come in here and say 'fiesta comes out next month!' but then i read your convoluted vomit of a post.

so you want a 'commuter' car with 250 horsepower? or something with 150 hp but 40 mpg? keep dreaming. and for 10 grand if you can help it? keep dreaming.

if you just got a new tranny the big expense is already done. head gasket shouldn't be more than that. after those two things what could really go wrong next?

anyway, no idea what mileage they'd get, but a first or second year G35 can be had with under 100K on the ticker for $10K or so.

They get about 17-18mpg city and maybe 23-24mpg on the highway.

How about a one or two year old Hyundai Elantra? 10-13k and will still have a few years of full coverage warranty. Should get you about 35 mpg with the right amount of power. A lot of interior room for that segment and it will easily last 150,000 miles.

Nice avatar Jules

Maybe a Suzuki SX4 sedan for something newer? Otherwise a used Corolla would be a good bet.

You like it? I was looking for a pic of my bike and found it on my hard drive. I had forgotten about it, I used to use on bikeforums.net when I was spending a lot of time there and commuting on my bike. Thought some of you would get a kick out of it.

I've seen TSX with 60k miles for under $15k. You can easily get 30mpg, and it's 200hp with 6speed.

Go with a 4cyl turbo car and 6spd manual.

Saab 2.0T
Audi 2.0T
VW 2.0T

If you are careful about your shift points you will get about 32mpg on the freeway. Best combination of performance, luxury, and economy.

What did you have that made 210hp on 87, 250hp on 89, cost $500/year, and got 30mpg? Just buy another one.

Used mazda 3 or 5, depending on what you like.
I had a 5 hatchback. Looks gay, but is incredibly nice. Good build, cheap maintenance.

I have a 2004 Ford Focus ZX3 with a standard transmission that I use as a daily driver. I drive 150+ mostly highway miles a day and average around 37 mpg doing an average of 75 mph... plus it has plenty of pep and a surprisingly comfortable ride. I picked it up about a year ago, paid $4900 for it and it had 72K on the odometer.

You could get an early 00 Jetta TDI, but maint on the older VW diesels is tricky and you need to have a good mech nearby that can take care of anything that might happen.
