Although anandtech has solved the mysterious battle of the ti2/3 cards. what about them compared to the rest .. .like Radeon 8500 and company. Which is the best for the buck?

Go with the Ti500. The article can tell you which manufacturer is best. I'm not to sure about how the Raedon 8500 stacks up to them, but I do know it's not as fast. It has some different performance modules than the GeForce series.
If you just want gaming go with GF3 ti500 - performs 10-15% faster than Radeon 8500. If you're looking for features the 8500 wins by a long shot. Features such as 2 firewire ports, video capturing, TV tuner, etc. Some of the older drivers had a few problems and were slower but with each release of drivers performance and quality improves. More potential is there for the 8500 - just depends on the improvements of the drivers they put out.
BTW: The 8500 model that feature enriched is the 8500DV model.
I don't have those particular cards, but I went from a gf2mx to a ATI AIW 7500 and the 2d quality difference was amazing. With the AIW 7500 the monitor screen looks so much more real and detailed. The reason I am mentioning this is because a lot of people who use dual screens are in the designing field and in that type of field 2D is very important.
I'd go with the R8500 over the Ti500, only slightly lower performance and you get a better 3D feature set, better 2D, better DVD, better FSAA, HydraVision, DVI-Out.
Not to mention you can get it for almost a $100 less then the Ti500. I'd say all of that easily compensates for the slightly slower performance, it's not like the R8500 is a "slow" card by any means as it's generally between the 'classic' GF3 and the GF3 Ti500 in performance.
I'd recommend the Ti500 over the 8500 but with the higher price of the Ti500 it'll be hard to justify my recommendation to some people. If you're on a budget then go with the 8500. If money is no object then get the Ti500.
Well, quite a few people including myself have had trouble with the radeon8500 crashing in games and freezing etc. If you had to buy a card now...the GF3 Ti200 is the absolute best.
For $100-150......I think the Gforce 3 ti500 is out of his range.
Sometimes , you can find good deals on the Radeon 8500 like I did. I found mine in the "used" merchandise section at a web outlet.
It only cost me $149 ( for OEM version......about 1 1/2 months ago).
If you check frequently, you can also get good deals at the "refurbished" section from companies like "NEWEGG".
For $149, and the performance/quality I get with my 8500, it was a good deal. Just keep looking around , and you'll find some good bargains in your price range.
Does the Radeon 8500 have better 2d quality than the Radeon 64ViVo (7200)? The 2d quality from my Radeon 64ViVo is only slightly better than my 3d Prophet 2 MX. Either I have bad eyes or my SamSung SyncMaster 753DF isn't good enough.
basically, for gaming... nvidia's got the edge is speed. for everything else, radeon is the way to go. i am quite surprised that the 8500 can be had for about $150. i have a radeon vivo and i like it a lot. i think the speed is decent for the occasional game i play, and suits my every other need quite well. all the driver issues ppl have been mentioning doesn't seem ot affect me. maybe i'm just lucky.
my radeon 8500le (250/250 still) along with my 1.2 ghz athlon....256 megs of pc-133 ram...and windows 2000 has been playing every game in 1024x768x32 max details...2x fsaa...max anisotropic filtering....it does get a tad slow in the heavy parts....but it's no way unplayable...I'd definately recommend this card....I wouldn't trade it at all for a ti500 or a ti200...plus some people at the rage3d board who claim to have ati inside contacts....say that ati has a new driver in the works and is working to fix the "high-poly bug" which...has nothing to do with polys at all...something to do with textures and not dumping the old textures....
what are the main differences between the RADEON 64MB VIVO and RADEON 8500DV? i don't play games .. i want to record TV programs to HD ... and i would definately want Linux compatibility ... and TV out ...
so what video card would you recommend (does not have to be ATI). i would even buy a separate TV card (if you can recommend a good one) and just get a "normal" video card w/ TV out ...
The GF3 Ti200, when properly cooled and overcooked, will perform just as well as its more expensive brother...and the price is gonna go down even more in the very near future, I'm sure...
radeon 8500 or ti 200? here in the uk the company i'm gonna get my new system from has phased out the ti 500, dunno maybe for the geforce 4, but the uk always takes longer to get new things, so it seems it's a G3 ti 200 or radeon, oh and g4mmx but forget that lol
