Best video card for Linux and Win2k?

I am looking at replacing my current graphics board (TnT2) with a newer, faster, shinier, etc. model. I really wanted to get a Radeon, but lack of Linux drivers and reported poor Win2k drivers have scared me away from that one. I was thinking about possible going with the GeForce 2 MX. Does anyone have a good recommendation for one of these (or another good card for my purposes)? Also, how do the DDR memory/64-bit MXcards compare to the regular SDR/128bit MX cards as far as performance (better, worse, or same)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best in terms of what? You can't just say "Whats the best video card for a particular operating system." There are so many variables involved in purchasing any computer peripheral, and video cards are no exception. Actually, they are probably one of the worst PC peripherals to choose from since they are all bunched up together. You need to define the #1 goal that you wish the video card to do. Then second, then third, etc..

By listing out each of these critieria in the priority that is most important to you. Everyone hear can definately help you with your purchasing decision. The people hear have been awfully helpful to me. I just purchased a radeon 32 ddr to replace my g400max.

To answer what you posted though. The best card for linux and win2k would probably be a geforce card. the difference between the mx and the old sdr I believe is neglible. However, the mx utilizes the gts core which has T&L and I believe their linux drivers are fairly stable and their win2k drivers are as solid as win9x. Of course my old fav matrox is great in linux and they have solid dual head action as well

Well, my main concern is cost, w/ second going to performance, and third would be image quality. (my current TnT2 is an Nvidia and looks fine so I don't think I'd have a problem w/ GeForce 2d quality). As for features I have no DVD drive or such, and TV-out for most cards won't work in Linux, so features really aren't a priority.

the DDR/64 bit MX is like 10% slower than the SDR/128 MX, if i remember correctly.

The Nvidia Linux drivers are excellent, easily the best of any card for 3D, in fact.

As for the 64 bit DDR MX cards, the only one I have seen reviewed is the creative. It was significantly slower than a 6ns 128 bit SDR MX card, since the creative was using 143 MHz DDR memory, and did not overclock well at all.

matrox or nvidia. both companies proved good linux support. i'm not too sure of matrox's win2k performance.
