I have an old IBM NetVista model 8303 52U (that someone gave to me) that has built-in / integrated Intel 845G video. I am assuming that it is 64mb but I have not been able to find out about that yet.

Am I correct that I would get better video performance by replacing the on-board Intel video with an Nvidia RIVA TNT2 64mb AGP graphics card ?

Thanks.

A TNT2 would be better than onboard video. Mostly due to the fact that the Intel video controller shares that 64MB of ram from the system memory. Your TNT2 will have dedicated graphics memory.

Unfortunately a TNT2 is pretty old by today's standards and there are much better choices for AGP cards, but if you're simply asking because you have an old TNT2 laying around, then i'd say go for it.

Yes, that is what I thought. Actually I have 3 other NetVistas (models 6790) that do not have on-board video but all three have the AGP cards and I am going to borrow one of them to go in the 8303.

Thanks.

These are the specs on the basic system-

8303-52U Pentium 4 1.8GHz
512KB 256MB 40GB 7200RPM 48x CD-ROM Intel 10/100 Windows XP Professional Integrated Intel 845G

Actually, it has an open low profile AGP slot, could still run as a low end gaming system with more ram. DDR PC3200 is getting expensive these days unless you have extra lying around.

You can use that old card for a slight improvement (provided it is low profile) or find a low profile AGP card on Ebay like a 2400 Pro, though I wouldnt pay more then $20.

The PSU also sucks but a $35 Antec Earthwatts 380 would solve that easy enough.

There are still some things worth salvaging from this system. The license for XP Pro, the HD, CD Drive, ect. I'd personally make it into a core-duo for under $180 (then OCed to 3.2)- that's including 2 gigs of good DDR2. Would be a very cheap build.
