Best video compression (codec)?

Who's got the best video compression? I've got some VCD's that I want to rip and compress to store on my PC. Each file is about 200MB, and I want to get it small enough to watch in full screen, keeping as much quality as possible. New, updated codecs keep coming out, so I don't know who's got the best lately. Any opinions?

DivX? Quicktime? WMV? Real?

have you tried MS's latest WMV codec? 8 or 9, i forget. how does it compare w/ DivX?

I use Divx 5.02 for all my recording needs.

Divx is probably the best, but the company turned evil really fast, so I don't like them much anymore. Damn greedy people.

anyone have experience w/ quicktime? those QT movie previews on apple's site always look real nice.

Hmmm..I've had pretty good luck with WMV8. WMV9 (corona) is supposed to be out September 4 or something like that.

depends on what you want?


home theater quality = mpeg 2.

divx is not equal to mpeg2, its just useful to ultra compress.

divx pro is free, check out their site. if you want the adless one then yes its not free.

definitely not home theater quality. just enough to put on my laptop HD, and watch stuff on the road. it's already VCD (MPEG-1).

mpeg4 is a superior codec to mpeg2. however, mpeg4 has been relegated to a streaming codec by many companies and ppl.

divx is also superior to mpeg2.

Where can it be downloaded? Once it's installed, is it present in a drop-down menu for use by any generic encoder? I use Vidomi for now to do video encoding; be good if this Corona codec could be used with that.

divx is also superior to mpeg2.

well, maybe mpeg-4 but i dunno about divx specifically. divx still has artifacting with very high bitrates. the current mpeg2 encoders are so well optimized that it's hard to beat when you are working with high bitrates.

as for real vs. windows media vs. quicktime, that's a little generic...you can't just say "quicktime" since quicktime uses different audio and video codecs, there is no "quicktime codec." Sorenson Video 3 is the best codec for quicktime and, used properly, it's almost as good as DivX I think. I like using MP3 sound in quicktime too.

Real is actually pretty good for low bandwidth stuff, but their software is just horrible.

What program (not codec) do you guys use when encoding something in Divx 5.02? Whenver I
use Virtualdub to convert something (generally a HQ mpeg) to a Divx file I get all kinds of audio
sync problems.
