I am REALLY suprised that no one has mentioned Halo both 1 and 2. Those games have a KILLER soundtrack.

yuck...i just hated ff7 in general. i know everyone regards it as "the best" ff (maybe even rpg) to come out, but i still never liked it. my first ff was ff8 and that will be my favorite. ff7 never did it for me...

*big fan of orchestrated/sounds like its orchestrated music*

oh yeah...starcraft also had some great music. now update the graphics/resolution please blizzard.......pleeeeease!

I noticed that NES music either rocks or sucks donkey balls.

Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Castlevania were all good, but so many were just horrible.

As for computer: Deus Ex, especially Hong Kong streets and Area 51.
Act of War has excellent in-level tunes.
All of the Age of Wonders games.
Anacronox.
AquaNox.
The race intro music themes in Age of Mythology.
Some of the Baldurs Gate 2 songs.
Black & White.
The final level music for Call of Duty.
A couple of songs in Chrome.
Counterstrike: Condition Zero.
Some Diablo 1 and 2 songs. Though some were also annoying.
The battle music in Disciples 2.
Doom of course. Also Quake 1 and 2.
A few of the more epic themes in Dungeon Siege 1 and 2.
Earth 2160 has AWESOME intro and installation music. (I need to find out who that chick is.)
Morrowind and Oblivion opening themes. (Especially when I turn the bass up just a little.)

Opening themes from Empire Earth 1 and 2.
Fallout 2 opening movie. (I think thats Louis Armstrong.)
Far Cry has a couple good tunes.
Freelancer has a few that I really loved.
FEAR has some good creepy tunes.
FULL THROTTLE!
Of course, do we really even need to discuss Freespace 2?
All the Homeworld games have good music throughout.
I think Imperium Galactica 2 has one or two I like.
Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy have the classic Star Wars music, along with some pretty good fight themes.
Battle music from Lords of the Realm 2.
Max Payne 1 had nice in game suspence music.
Max Payne 2 has 2 excellent theme songs and also good in game tunes.

MDK 2 had several kick-ass pieces.
I really liked one of the battle songs from Mechwarrior 4.
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.
No one lives forever 2.
O.R.B. (Off world resource base.)

Red Faction 1 and 2 had plenty of good songs, many of which are available on the RF 2 discs.
I enjoyed some of the up tempo pieces from Return to Castle Wolfenstien. Like when you invade a base and the alarm goes off.
SimCity 3 and 4.
Most of the StarCraft music was favorable.
Star Wars Force Commander. (Good music regardless of the games suck factor.)
Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, not John Williams music but pretty good.
I liked the first half of Total Anihilation's music collection.

Many of the Unreal themes are nice.
The CD version of Warcraft 2. The midi songs are crap.
Warhammer: Dawn of War has awesome music. Available on the extra disc if you got the collectors version.
And of course, the final Star Wars fighter sim: X-wing Alliance, for obvious resons.

NEW POST!
Those were just the games I saw in my current collection that I liked.

Also enjoyed the C&C Hellmarch, and many songs from Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2.
Loved the Duke 3D and Manhatten Project music.
There was once a Win95 game called Hunter Hunted. Good music, bad game.
Also Terminal Velocity and Fury3 had good stuff.

Too many to name from my SNES to mention.
(Let me make a list later. )

EDIT: CRAP!
Forgot about Guild Wars. While the game was lacking in many areas, music was top-notch.

DOUBLE CRAP!
Forgot "Z". Cool intro and in game music too.

TRIPLE CRAP!!!
Forgot about my all-time DOS favorites.
HELL, (with Dennis Hopper and Stephanie Seymore.) Awesome intro and decent game music.
Ravenloft: Stone Prophet, but only if you had a wavetable card. Otherwise crap.
Elvira 2, Jaws of cerberus wasnt bad either.

yeah, im obsessed with video game music. its my favorite favorite favorite type of music to listen to.

Then you must have refused to play FF7 past a certain point, it features the best music the series has ever had and I can honestly say this after playing every Final Fantasy game that has been released in the US (yes even Mystic Quest). So intenionally leaving out FF7 unless you stopped playing it at a certain point is just ridiculous, I've known heavy haters of FF7 who STILL admitted the musical score was one of the best.

I've played the first few FF games (2 through 5) and I wasn't too impressed with the music. I have heard some stuff from FF7 which I thought was very good but I haven't heard enough of it to put it on my list.

x-wing vs. tie fighter

doesn't really count hough, since they just lifted the movie score. still, the music made 25% of the greatness of that game.

Theres' actually very little game music I really like - (just like there's not much film music I like etc.)... I want my music to be tuneful, or at least strongly melodic, and computer games, (like most modern films), rarely have music like that consistently throughout the entire content of the work... Most games, like most films these days, generally have a good theme tune, but then the quality falls away afterwards...

So - games I like:

All the Star Wars games with the proper music
Age of Wonders (1&2)
Quite a few japanese RPG's I like the music in - (such as the final fantasy series, Azure Dreams, Secret of Mana etc. ).

I don't really like the sort of games with the overblown orchestral stuff in though - (similar to most films these days it seems)...

(I'm still waiting for a game to use proper celtic (Irish etc.) music - AFAIK it hasn't been done yet - but would be perfect for an RPG... ).
