make sure your steak is at room temp before you cook it. let it out of the fridge 1 to 2 hours (this depends on the thickness of the steak) before you plan to cook it. flip the steak on a plate (or whatever you are using to hold the steak) every 30 minutes so it evenly reaches room temp.

if you cook your steak when it's cold from the fridge, the outside will cook faster than the middle, you will have a rare inner part. However, if the cut is very thin, it helps for the steak to be a bit coler than room temp, because this way it will be a little bit juicier.

That's gotta be it.. 400F in Canadian degrees = 350F in American degrees, depending on the current exchange rate..

I was thinking the exact same thing.

You don't need a broiler to cook steak. Take it out of the package, wash it, add seasonings, dump a whole bunch of BBQ/steak sauce on it, plus extra to coat the dish, and cook it at 400 for an hour or so.

no

DOUBLE NO!

There has been a lot of bad steak advice thrown around on this forum, but that is absolutely the worst I've heard yet. I really really hope it's a joke and my sarcasm meter is off today.

Tomato:
This is all you need to know. You can adjust cooking time depending on the size/thickness of the steak.

Thanks werk! I cooked all 3 steaks like this last night, and they were so tender and juicy. 30 seconds pan-seared on each side, straight into the oven for 2 more minutes on each side. Simple and delicious!

for the love of God, don't do what melly says!

Sift kosher salt and rock pepper sparingly on each side, cut off a little bit of fat from the side to grease the pan with, then sear on each side, cook, and eat.

My oven has no broiler, and I don't have a grill... all I have is an oven and a small george forman grill which probably won't fit the steaks.

Can anyone recommend a good cooking technique for the steaks (in the oven or on the stove)? My options are, unfortunately, quite limited.

hmmm

How do i cook meat 101.

good grief

stick to toast and eggs if cooking meat is that much of a technical difficulty

Turns out it's incredibly easy, I just needed some beginner pointers.

Sorry everyone isn't born inherintly knowing how to cook meat such as yourself.

Get one of those bladed meat tenderizers and poke it for a minute or so. Coat it in a mixture of flour with added salt/pepper/garlic. Pan fry it in a frying pan with 1/4" oil. Cook each side until it turns medium brown and you should get a medium cooked steak. Good stuff Great with eggs.

You don't need a grill.

Build a fire. Attach meat to stick. Hold over fire.

We figured out fire long ago. There are many flammable objects in your house such as sofa, bed, grandma, wookies.

Steak is important.

Could you please explain why?

I see nothing wrong with cooking a steak in the oven if you have to. It's still a steak.

1)"Wash it." There goes a whole bunch of flavor and juices down your drain.
2)"Add seasonings." Well that's extraordinarily vague.
3)"Dump a whole bunch of BBQ sauce on it." Hmm...never a good idea to coat something you're going to cook at a high temp in large amounts of sugar...unless you like the taste of charcoal, that is.
4)"Cook it at 400 for an hour or so." See #3. An hour at 400 degrees won't only leave you with a lump of charcoal but will probably start a freaking fire.

I heat the sh1t out of a cast iron pan, oil then salt and pepper my steak (kosher and fresh ground) which has warmed to room temp, and hit the pan for about a minute a side.

But I eat my steak blue.

An hour in the oven at 400F sounds like I'd throw it out after.

There's not, but if you're going to do that, you should just get a roast. It's cheaper, you get a bigger meal, and it'll taste the same.

I cook my ribeyes(typically about ~1inch thick) 30 seconds per side on a cast iron skillet on the stove(on high heat), then throw it in the oven(pre-heated) for 1 minute per side. I like my steak alive and moving.
