I took a short nap (~40 mins) on the plane when coming here to London, then stayed up until probably 11pm local time before sleeping. Woke up the next day at 8am without any jetlag.
That's the way to do it.

1) Drink lots of water on the plane. At least one glass per 30 minutes.
2) Get up from your seat once an hour and stretch your legs. (Aisle seat recommended.)
3) Upon arrival, do not take a nap. Instead, take a shower, brush your teeth, change clothes, and then go eat a balanced meal.
4) Stay active the entire first day. Try to walk a bit. Explore your destination.
5) Fall asleep at a normal "bed time" around say 11:00 PM local time.

Doing this should permit your to get a full, 8-hour sleep, waking up at a normal time. Your body will now be on the "local" time schedule.
I'll take the Hookers and blow for $500.

Be sure to take along some melatonin to help you sleep through what your body believes is daytime.

It really just depends on where you're going. I sometimes have to travel 24hrs straight from out my front door in the morning until I arrive at the destination hotel. I just try my best to get on local time as much as possible, drink a lot of water, etc. But when you're on a plane for 15 hours it's really really difficult to not find yourself asleep at some point.

This is an old thread, but I didn't feel the need to start a new one. I'll be leaving CA around 2-something in the afternoon on a Thursday and arriving in London around noon on Friday. (I have a connecting flight in Los Angles.) I've read a couple of different theories here. Would it be best if I slept for a few hours on the flight and just stayed up when I got to London? I'll be with my fiance and in-laws, so I don't have to worry about waiting for a hotel room or anything, but I don't want to go to bed when I get there, necessarily, either. :-/ I want to acclimate as soon as I can. I'll be there for 2 weeks.

Personally, I'd take a *short* nap on the plane (maybe an hour) and then stay awake for the rest of the time. Hit the hay early that first day and get a solid night's sleep and you should be good to go.

Leaving CA at 2pm CA time and arriving in London at 12 noon London time?
Yes. Well sort of. I leave locally at 2-something, then I arrive at LAX. I think I leave there at 5-something and then I arrive in London around noon London time. I normally sleeping pills to sleep, but if I should only take a nap, then I probably shouldn't take one of those. lol I would probably sleep through most of the flight. Though you never know....sometimes even they don't work if I'm excited, nervous, whatever-the-hell-else-keeps-me-up. By the time I leave from LAX to go to London, it will be about 1AM their time. Should I try to nap then to try to get on THEIR schedule? Oy this is a pain in the ass! MmmSkyscraper never has jet lag when he's here, I swear. I don't know how he does it. lol

After a 16 hours flight, I played basketball for about 4 hours in the afternoon. Out like a light and a fitful night of sleep. Was the fastest I ever recovered from jetlag.

Didn't I give that info? Leaving CA (LAX) around 5-something PM. Arriving in London the next day around noon.

My advice stands for your situation.

Most of my jetlag experience comes from flying East to Europe. I personally find flying West to be more difficult to adjust to.

On top of what has already been said, spend as much time in the daylight at your destination, that helps reinforce the new schedule to your body. Some people have more problems with jet lag than others, so ymmv. I once flew from Sydney to LA to DC to Dubai in a 96 hour span and didnt have any trouble with Jet lag, but i was used to crazy travel like that at the time and even boozed it up on all of those flights!

when my day extended by 7 hours due to jet lag, i just went to sleep at like 8 PM at my destination. I had to force myself not to nap. But I woke up at 7am the following morning. I was tired during the day, but going to sleep at 8 PM again got rid of the jet lag.

I'm afraid I'm going to be super-tired going there just because the last few days have been very, very busy. Even if I sleep on the flight, when I get over there I'm just going to try to adjust my body to their schedule. I'll try to stay up when it's daylight and then go to sleep at a reasonable hour. I've got to try not to nap! lol
