Best way to download 120MB File with a lousy Dial Up Connection?

We are out in the middle of the woods and only have a lousy dial up connection that says I'm connected at 46.6

Trying to download a 120MB file on this POS connection is giving me nightmares.

I get about 70-80MB downloaded after about 8 hours and it says download completed when I know it's not.

Any advice on the best way to download large files on the piss poor connection?

Would a download manager help any?

Any recommendations besides driving over 100 miles to find DSL?

How long should a 120MB file take to download on this type of connection?

I'll host the file on Rapid Share for you. It may, or may not, make a difference, but you could try it just for shits and giggles. Rapidshare does have a resume feature for free downloaders.
Point me to the file, and I'll host it 'till you get the whole thing.

One more thing. I can split the file into many smaller portions, but it will hafta be at least two 60 giggers.

It's been years since I used a dial-up connection, but if I remember correctly the best download speed I ever saw on dial-up was about 12-13 MB per hour. Your 120 MB file would take roughly 10 hours at that speed, plus or minus an hour or two depending on your actual connection speed.

A download manager would let you resume the download from where it left off instead of at the beginning if the connection is lost before the download is finished.

A manager will let you resume a broken download.

I could break your file into 10 or 20MB sections, and you just put it back together with WinRAR. You probably have a much better chance of getting a smaller file.

If you are going to use a download manager, try to use internet explorer to do with download. Both firefox and seamonkey have non resuming download managers built in and its an extra hassle to by pass them so a resuming download manager does the Download.

Two free download managers are leech get and star download manager. There are many others but I have gotten by with either.

Depending on how good your connection is, 10-12 hours is a starting guess for 120 MB. But most download managers will show download speed in Kilo bytes per second. Since the number may vary widely as the download progresses, try to estimate an average. Then you can do the math and figure it out, or for that matter, the download manager should display how much time remaining.

But often public libraries will have some sort of broadband, is there any such less than 100 miles away?

Its been years (at least a decade) since I dealt w\ dial up, but I seem to remember getright being really good back in the day. Not sure if it still is, I think this is the website - http://getright.com/.

I use getright sometimes because it downloads .lst files, where you can simply put the url's in notepad, one url per line, and save it as *.lst On dialup i used HJSpilt, a free 96kb application that both the sender and reciever would use. It can split to ANY size. I even once took a 1GB file and split it into 1MB files just for the heck of it, to see i could. I got the space for it, so if you want, I will download the file for you, split it with HJplsit into sizes you would like, and then send a .lst of the files to you.

Move to Korea or Japan. You get either 1/7 the price for broadband in Korea or 13x the speed in Japan. Probably be faster then downloading. Or some of the suggestions above are good too.

If the dialup is totally stable on 46.6Kb/sec. the download would be about 5KB/sec. and it should take about 7hours.

However since it is uncommon that the DialUp would Not have any "Hiccups" for so long you probably would keep getting Corrupted files.

Then you could download without using a download manager, or browser issues.
