Best Way To Partition? Need some ideas

RIght now I have

Raptor 150 and Seagaet 320 and it's like:

Raptor:
1) 30 - OS, progs
2) 120 other

Seagate
1) other

but I will do soon:
Raptor
1) 50 - OS,progs
2) 100 other

Seagate
1) other

I think I need to separate OS from MY document just incase my OS crash. Not sure how big the OS partition should be for XP and future Vista.

I understand that folder is easier which is what i did in Seagate. Only 3 partition required i

What If I do something like this
Raptor
1. 30GB OS + Application + Games+ Pagefile 1
2. 120GB My Documents + Save Games

Seagate
1. 30GB PageFile 2 + Download Temp + IE temp + Firefox Temp
2. 570GB Collections
3. 150GB Backup (image of OS + My Documents)

Is it a good idea?

There is no performance advantage in having multiple partitions. You're just making things more difficult for yourself by having all of those partitions. Defragmentation is way overrated. With NTFS(compared to FAT32) fragmentation doesn't cause a noticable drop in performance unless it's very severe. Don't worry about it.

You should use the smaller, faster Raptor drive for the OS and programs. Use the bigger drive for your data and Ghost images of the Raptor drive. Just one partition(always NTFS) on each drive. Use folders for organization. I think I'd keep the page file on the Raptor. Set the size manually(Min=Max=4096MB) so it won't fragment.

Why do you want to keep your My Documents and Saved Games on the Raptor? I'd put ALL of the data on the bigger drive. That way you could replace or reformat the Raptor without losing any data.

I keep My Documents in Raptor because it is the fast drive and it will be better for me if im doing my projects fast. Besides that, If I only use Raptor just for OS then i will waste a lot of space.

Personally I'd just use the entire 150GB Raptor for my OS and what not and have the 750GB dedicated to everything else.

Right now I have a 74GB Raptor and I have that entire thing dedicated to my OS and then a 300GB Maxtor dedicated to storage and what not.

Well another thought of having another partition for My documents is because if somehow my OS gets corrupted or damage , it will be easier to reinstall it and My documents will not be lost.....

The thing is, all of those partitions are on the same hard drives so if something causes the hard drive to mess up then you'll be SOL anyway.

You dont need partions for that - just ghost whole your raptor with OS and documents to 750GB Seagate and it´ll be safer because even if one disk dies nothing important(OS + Docs.) will be lost.

If you're so freaked about losing My Documents, just use SyncBack to keep an updated copy of the folder anywhere you want.

I have two HDs in my PC. a 74GB Raptor and a 400GB Caveir. They are both one big chunch each.

Thats how I would do it.

Like somebody else already said...Put all your storage(including My Documents) on the Seagate so if the OS fails you won't lose My Documents. I don't get what is so confusing here. Take the people's advice about not using so many partitions, it is pointless and degrades performance. Directories are the way to organize, defrag only when needed and do it when you are away from the PC so it doesn't matter how long it takes. And like these people have already said, large storage files won't require much defragmentation so that isn't really an issue.

1 Partition(Raptor) = OS
1 Partition(Seagate) = Storage w/organized directories.

If you really want a separate partition for your Raptor backup then split the Seagate into two separate partitions, but any more is really un-needed.
