Just think that you're saving money by not burning them in the form of cigarettes. It helps a lot better than any other medicine. A lot of people quit smoking completely this way.

Also it's important to understand that smoking doesn't just 'cause lung cancer'. The whole story is a whole dirtier one. Life is dirty in general, and smoking is one of such tricky, dirty things. You see that white cigarette filter become brown as you smoke? The same, exact same thing is happening to one's lungs - they kind of filter out the smoke, and are contaminated more and more. You don't have that much of lungs to filter out all that smoke. And what's even worse, that contamination will never, never clean up. It's permanent inside one's lungs, even if a person will never smoke again.

Such thoughts can also help quit smoking, IMO.

I had the quit date set a month ahead. That helped me psyche myself up to it. When the day came, I started doing Nicorette gum. Read about Nicorette. People complain about the taste but if you read the instructions, you're not really supposed to chew it like regular gum. You need the slow release of nicotine into your system so your body doesn't go into withdrawal -- the withdrawal that gives you the urge to smoke.

About a week or two later, I started using less and less of the gum. The instructions tell you to use it for 3-4 weeks, IIRC. But I also read on webmd.com that some people get addicted to the gum. I didn't want that to happen to me so I tapered off early.

Once you quit, don't even think about smoking just one stick, thinking you're all done. If you smoke, even just one "harmless" cigarette in the first year of being smokefree, the addiction will come back 10 times stronger. That's why you hear about a lot of people who quit for a few months then get right back into it.

Good luck.

do not buy nor bum smokes.
do not carry a lighter.
do not put a smoke in your mouth and do not light it if you do.
if you find a lit smoke in your mouth do not inhale.

You cant quit until you WANT to quit. If you really want to quit, just stop smoking. Its that easy. Dont let anyone and dont let yourself tell you that its hard. Its easy....just dont do it. If you really want to quit, this shouldnt be a problem.

Tommorrow is 1 year since I quit. Not smoking is much better than smoking.

First you have to really want to quit. The most important thing of quitting smoking is wanting to, not just deciding on a whim you want to quit. My girlfriend used the nicoderm patches to quit smoking. She went through the first two steps, and didn't even have to use the third step to quit. After you haven't smoked for a few months, if you decide to try it again, it will most likely taste like sh!t, and it's a bit easier to not start smoking again when you're a little bit older and don't have the peer pressure.

Don't think you can quit without having urges. It can't be done. All you have to do is just don't succumb to them. For me the urges were a b!tch. Luckily, the really strong urges only lasted for a week at most. The closest I came to succumbing was driving to the gas station...I made it about half way before coming to my senses and turning around. That was around the 3rd day. But after that, it was all downhill. I've been to the bar since then, ballgames since then, etc....the temptations still show up, but they aren't nowhere near as strong as they were when I was first quitting. The biggest help for me (I quit cold turkey) was buying a few packs of plastic straws. They're about 50 cents per 100. I chewed them every waking moment for a few weeks. But after a while, you won't need anything to take your mind off smoking.

BTW, I smoked for over 20 years. I've been smokefree for about 9 months now and feel great. As for any weight gain, I gained about 15-20 lbs upon quitting, but that's been gone for a while now.

Quitting is a b!tch...but only for a few days. Get passed the first week, and you're home free. But you have to want to succeed.

self control is for someone who eats everything in sight, or bits their nails, or cracks their knuckles.

when you are dealing with an addictive substance, like nicotene, more than self control is needed.

i think its obvious you dont smoke, but you'll probably tell me you did and quit. But i wont care either way.

I just quit on Christmas day.. not going too bad so far. I got a computer program called Silkquit Meter. It tells you exactly how long it has been since you quit, it tells you how many cigeretts you have not smoked, how much you have extended your life and how much money you have saved since you quit. It's kinda neat. Right now i am at 1 day 18 hours and 30 minutes

I just quit cold turkey.. I never really heard good things about the gum or the patch.. but I did hear good things about Zyban

Also whatever you do, never try to have a cigerette to prove to yourself that you can have just one and have it not bother you.. this is a big no no.. I had over a month under my belt when I quit a while back, and I just had one cigerette to see if I could do it without it bothering me.. next thing I knew I was smoking within a week. Also, drink pleanty of fluids and expect some headaches, insomnia and irratibility.

jfall reminded me of the fact that for every week I didn't smoke I would stick $20 in an empty coffee can. After a few months I removed all the money and bought all the parts for a new computer.

You just make up your mind that you will never smoke again and do it. Most people's cessation problems are motivation related, not much different from losing weight. You have to be committed, becoming a non-smoker must be a priority, and you must be willing and ready to endure a little hardship to achieve your goal. Whatever it takes. Again, not much different from losing weight.

But, millions of lazy or weak people will sit around feeling sorry for themselves, trying only half-hearted and ineffective attempts to accomplish their goals, because they don't really want to lose weight or quit smoking if it means that they must endure a little hardship.

Find one thousand overweight people who say they are "very serious" about wanting to lose weight, gather them all in the same place, and ask them two questions:

"Ok, I have a plan here that will make you lose weight. It requires a lot of hard physical exercise and cutting junk food out of your life. How many of you are interested?"

"Ok, I have a plan here that will make you lose weight. You just take a pill then sit on the couch and watch TV. How many of you are interested?"

The response rate to the first question will be pretty small, whereas for the second, it will probably be 100%. Lesson? Not everyone who claims to be serious about accomplishing a goal are in fact truly serious about it. You have to ask yourself, "To which group do I belong?"
