Talk to your doctor, he can help tell you what would be best for you. There is a medication you can take that helps ALOT, it will help cut down the cravings by quite a bit. I have quit and gone back a few times, most the time its during depression and stress that I end up going back. The patch and gum both help a little bit, but not a ton. The patch is more constand, you get cravings with the gum because you get sudden doses of nicotine, not a smooth rate of it, so all of a sudden your out of gum... and you go for a smoke. I forgot the name of it but the medication my doctor gave me helped by a large amount, it cut down the cravings and the overall crappy feeling you feel while quiting cold turkey. I plan to quit again myself, because I want to move in with my g/f and she doesnt like it, and wont allow it if we live together, I will be going back to my doctor and getting that medication again.

I used Zyban, and it worked alright for me. I think it just helped me over the hump mentally, but didn't really cure my addiction. As others have said, you have got to really want to quit. You're not going to (or at least have a hard time) quit unless you have made your mind up and dedicate yourself to quitting. Remember that nicotine is quite a strong substance to be addicted to and won't let you go without a fight. All nonsmokers will not understand the extreme difficulty it is to overcome the addiction. Don't just cut down to two or three a day and think you'll be able to quit. Might as well smoke a pack as far as that much is worth. As long as you feed the addiction, no matter how small, the addiction will live. I never thought I'd be able to quit, but finally gained the determination to quit and wasn't going to take failure as an option. I've been smoke free for over 10 months now, and haven't looked back. It was probably the hardest thing for me to do in my life, but definately the most satisfying.

It's called "self control."

self control is for someone who eats everything in sight, or bits their nails, or cracks their knuckles.

when you are dealing with an addictive substance, like nicotene, more than self control is needed.

i think its obvious you dont smoke, but you'll probably tell me you did and quit. But i wont care either way.

I smoke cigars but used to smoke one-two packs a week.

It is hard to quit. In my 6 yrs of smoking I have tried to quit about 3 times but I just havent been able to do it. I thought I wanted to but I really didnt and was not motivated to quit. I dont know when will be the next time I quit.

When my sister tried to stop biting her nails, she used to paint her nails that made them taste HORRIBLE. Needless to say, she stopped. (for a while, but then started again, but that's not the point.)

Maybe, soak your cigarettes in Iodine or something, so they taste like crap. And don't let anyone give you any. or even forget the cigarettes at home and just hang out in the smoker's lunge during break and toke up the second hand smoke?

Sorry...non-smoker here. I can't come up with good examples.

cold turkey

Cold Turkey...yeah right...Unless I plan on rolling and smoking a cold turkey, that ain't gonna work. Huge lack of will power.

What you just said is the problem and the answer.

If you are sincere in wanting to quit, cold turkey is the only thing that works. The rest are nothing more than substiutes and when they are gone, you'll look for a cigarette. You have to earnestly want to quit at all costs!

Stay away from the smell of tobacco for the first 6 weeks. In the first week, you have to recognize those urges to smoke are your addiction trying to feed itself. Deny the urge. Starve the addiction out of existance. If you feel an urge, go eat some popcorn or sunflower seeds or something.

Stay out of smokey places like bars or restaurants that allow smoking. Take a wide birth around and away from people who light one up outside your building or wherever you are. You need to faithfully follow this advice for at least 6 weeks to ween yourself from the urges. The addiction will abate, and the smell of tobacco smoke will make you ill. Tyou will be so happy to have clean smelling clothes and furniture. Your car will need to be fumigated, and if that doesn't do it, buy a new car!

You will be so happy not being a slave to that addiction. It is heinous.

I so much hope and pray you are successful. You can do it if you really REALLY try. It is not a new years joke. It is life and breath.!

2 good ways:

1. Wellbutrin. Go to your doctor and tell him you want to quit. He'll prescribe you this antidepressant which has the remarkable side effect of causing you to quit smoking. Works on most people. Horrid side effects (sleep disorders and sexual dysfunction) are possible in some people though.

2. Make a list of anyone and everyone that cares about you. For each name on the list, write a simple card saying something to the effect of, "Dear XXX, because I know you care about me and don't want to see me die, I promise you that I will quit smoking. Love, <your name>" Give the card to that person. You have now promised them you will stop. Make sure to give it to your friends, your parents and your significant other. There, you have now made a promise to those that love you the most that you will stop smoking. You don't want to let them down, now, do you?

I used the patch. It worked fine for me. I did not do it the entire 6 weeks just for 2. It was hardest the first 3 days after that it got much easier. I was an ass to everyone I knew for a month and I gained about 10 pounds but I have not had a cig since the day I quit. I had smoked about 2 packs a day for 5 years and had smoked a pack a day for about 5 years before that. I quit 6 months ago and I still want a cig but it is controlable and it is all mental now. I quit because i was wasting almost 300 bucks a month on cigs that is a car payment.

I hope it goes well it sucks but it will be better in the long run.

I have heard dying works well. I know of no recorded cases of a dead person starting to smoke again. Good luck with the method you chose.
