Best way to sell a bulk of Magic The Gathering Cards?

So my grandpa owns some apartment buildings around Chicago, and since he's an old man with pack-rat tendencies he'll rifle through the trash or stuff people leave behind after they move out. Like two years ago he found these binders that were full of Magic Cards, brought them to my mom, who brought them to me thinking I would want them since I collected comics and sports cards back in the day.

I have no use for these...but I have no idea how to get rid of 1200 cards efficiently. Having recently found ATOT, I figured there might be a Magic player or two on here who could point me in the direction of reputable price guides or popular forums or something. I'm really not too concerned about getting actual value for them, but anything that could go towards CC debt would be nice.

PS. I hope this is the right place for this...wasn't sure if I should put it here or in FS/T.

1. go to a comic shop, grab a Scrye magazine (there was another that i forget the name of) use it to look up the card values.
2. Post the cards on e-bay

I'd hit up a card shop and buy a price guide. Given that they were in binders/such and not loose in a box, there might be a few rares in the lot.

LOL wow ATOT ftw. 5 replies in six minutes. Thanks so much guys...I'd actually tried eBay a while back with not much success, listing them just as a bag grab pretty much. Looks like I'll try one of those price guides and hunker down with it for a few hours...good thing today's my day off.

Thanks again for the link. I've been looking at the lists now for a bit....and I'm thoroughly confused. What list should I be looking at? I'm assuming "Non-Foil Physical Magic Cards," or "Non-Foil Physical Magic Cards (Weekly)." (What's the difference?)

Also...any help in differentiating editions? Would copyright date on the border of the cards help me? Or border color. So confused.

Yeah, i've got 10k in my closet still. Keep meaning to inventory them and put em up for sale but never get to it.

Use the weekly, if the card isn't on the weekly then look at the full list (the ones not on the weekly are rarer, haven't been sold in the past week, usually worth a bit more).

As for edition, the special editions are easy to determine, there should be a symbol on the right side just below the picture. Check here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_sets

I believe the 6th edition+ has a symbol also. The others I am not sure, probably just check the date. Alpha/beta are easy, they are black border with not symbols.

You can send me any Mox or Black lotus you happen to have, they are worthless...

Unless you have a few dozen rares/rares that are in demand, you're not going to have much luck selling them on eBay. IF that's the case, you probably want to sell it off as a lot. IF you do have alot of rares/super rares, you should split those off, and then sell the rest of the BS as a lot

Ahhh....thanks for the Wiki link, that should help. I'm not sure the cards are arranged in sets, from what I can tell. It looks like they may have belonged to someone who was trying to sell them at a flea market or something because some of the pages will have a couple of the individual slots with a price stuck on them.

So I'll have to spend some time looking through these things, and I'll report back here if I find anything worthwhile.

Hmm...I wouldn't even know where to start. Like I said, there's at least a thousand unique cards, from my quick count. I know I didn't see any Black Lotus or anything (even I as a non-player know that card is money, from my comic-book days). Would it be possible to list some of the decent cards I should look out for? There are WAY too many cards to list the good ones. What sets are they from? Generally, the older stuff is going to be worth more. Definitely look at anything from Legends, Antiquities, Arabian Nights, alpha, beta (make sure they are black border otherwise they are reprints, not worth much). I got out of it just after Fallen Empires was released (most worthless set they made).

My friend who is still into it says that Dual Lands from Revised, Unlimited, Alpha, Beta are still considered the currency of Magic (ie, you can trade anything for X dual lands). Tundra, Underground Sea, Badlands, Taiga, Savannah, Scrubland, Volcanic Island, Bayou, Plateau, and Tropical Island. ~$15-$20 each. Almost every collection has at least one of these. I still kick myself for not trading my Legend's dragon for a complete set of Dual Lands.
