Best way to store/invest your $?

I have a substantial amount of money saved up.

i want to put it in an investment where it will give me more return than a savings account.

But if I need it in a jam, i want to be able to draw it out too.

Well the easy ones are cd's or bonds, which should give more interest, but always check the rates before getting them. CD's do have penalties for early withdrawal, but it depends on the term of the cd (which also determines the interest rate). I had a cd for a while and was just letting it sit there and renew, but then I realized after the rates came down that I wasnt making jack anymore.

Have you checked out ETFs? i'm thinking of doing it myself: http://www.toyourwealth.com/archives/arch_etf.htm

It's an exchanged traded index fund. Basically a S&P 500 diversifed shares in one share. So you can benefit with the stock market and sell it whenever you want to.
