I would suggest Macromedia Dreamweaver for website development. MySQL is good for a database.

vi for website development and mysql or postgresql for databases (depending on exact needs).

Yes. You can also use vim on many other platforms including Microsoft Windows.

OK now I have another question for you guys

basically if I wanted to create database with all a websites pages in it (the HTML). Then could I create a template and have the data from the database loaded? I know i can create templates with Dreamweaver, but I want to do it this way, because there are things I don't really like about templates.

Thanks!

too dynamic web sites have their downsides - they can't handle high loads.

notepad is the best in my opinion. i would like frontpage too since access to the html is easy as opposed to dreamweaver's unecesssarily odd interface, but the preview utility is inconsistent with ms's own browser! something that works in the preview of frontpage looks or behaves totally differently on ms explorer. id expect that maybe with netscape but ie? lol

And whatever you do (if this is not an internal site) make sure you test everything with a WIDE range of browsers.

Small list of browsers you should probably check with:

Netscape 4.7, 6.1
Mozilla (latest release)
ie 5.5, 6.0
Omniweb 4.0.5
Opera 5.x

I know I personally use all of these except mozilla and ie 6, and I would love to be able to use omniweb for more sites...

I would go with UltraEdit and either mysql or postgresql. To do a templated site, use PHP (just an option), then you could just call the templates from a table in your db. As for the strain on your system... Just make sure that any results that you fetch, you clear as soon as you're done with them....

in PHP using MySQL it would be mysql_free_result(resource_id);

That way, your massive result will not bog down while the rest of the script loads... RAM is the most important aspect when dealing with db select statements... lots of ram means no strain

[edit: afterthought] If you do a lot of JavaScript and client side scripting, do a test in NN4.7.x as well as the new gecko engine. I've found that many of the client side scripts break on this new engine...[/edit]
