Best Window Manager for laptop?

I'm using Redhat 7.2 on an older laptop (HP Omnibook 2100 - P2-233, 96mb RAM) right now and need to find a good windowmanager to use for software development (MySQL + PHP + Apache) and for word processing (using Abi_Word). I've heard that IceWM is one of the lowest resoure-using wmanagers - any other recommendations?

thanks,
Rob

Just sit tight, the Debian people are coming in soon... but before they get here
might I suggest emacs?

You might, but I'd guess my g/f wouldn't care much for that (she's the one doing the word processing).

XFCE
I picked up because it reminds of the good old days when I was using Solaris on Sun Sparc. But it is so quick in response that I never turned to KDE or Gnome again.

fow99,

Can you tell me what type of system resources that is taking up right now?

blackbox is simple, pretty, and takes up very little resources. IceWM was also small and quick, but it looks too much like Windows (an interface I cant stand).

Hmm... what's wrong with Windows' interface? Haven't you noticed that KDE, Gnome and many other WM's use a similar GUI?

Others like it and thats fine. I dont like it. I dont like going through layers upon layers to get to something simple. The start button like thing that most of the WM/DEs out there have is too limiting. I have to be down there at that spot to get to those options, whereas with bb I can left/right/middle click anywhere on the background and pull up my menus. It just makes things easier for me because I dont have to be in one little spot to get to the options I use constantly. Its just not the type of interface I like.

In Windows and Linux I like to create 'symlinks', so that with one single command I can start the program I need. That much for the 'starting and accessing stuff' part.

I was actually mostly referring to the GUI itself, the buttons to open/minimize/close windows, buttons in programs themselves, the shape of the window elements... you know.

The Windows interface contains the most basic elements which are required for a fully functional GUI, that's why every single WM and GUI out there can be compared with Windows' GUI and so many similarities can be found. The reason that there are so few GUI's which do things 'different', is because you can't make a much more efficient GUI than the Windows one, or the KDE one, or the MacOS one, or the BeOS one.

A GUI is actually pretty limited in how it can look. That's why WinXP, MacOS X and various WM's get more and more eyecandy added to the windows, buttons and stuff.

To be honest, I don't find the GUI of BB more efficient than any other GUI. Even the GUI of AtheOS is more efficient.

This is alla bout personal taste though. I have been using bb for a while now, and I like the way it is setup, it makes quite a bit of sense to me, and I dont really see the need to use anything else. Its efficient for me. Its easy for me. It appeals to me. If they decide to change it I will probably continue using one of the old versions until it will no longer compile on my machines. I like bb, you like KDE or whatever it is you use. Why does this have to be a war over what I like and why I like it? I gave my opinions on how bb shouldnt over complicate things or change the way it looks and feels because some microsoft junkie cant understand it and Im done.

You're right. It's partially about personal preference. However, GUI's will always look alike because they're bound to certain (unwritten) rules.

The slowest machine I've ever run XFCE on is a Duron 600+128M and it is very fast. I am pretty sure it will run smoothly on much lower system. The whole source tree tar ball is only 4M!

Another vote for XFCE!!

I like it a lot and I keep going back to it after testing/trying every new kde/gnome release!!

But IceWM and BlackBox are good also, each has its space!!

I also vote for BB, but I would recommend that if you have the disk space you install KDE and Gnome, just to get the apps and the libraries. This way you can run all of the gnome or KDE apps you want under BB, no problem.

I like abiword for word processing, or even something simple like Gedit.

Your machine doesn't sound too lightweight however. I am running BB as described above (with gnome and KDE installed) on a p-166, with 64 megs of ram, and it is fine. Not the same as my PIII 700, but it is workable.

EDIT: Many thanks to Nocmonkey for turning me (and Iam sure others) on to Black box.

i have to shill for my favorite wm, which is windowmaker. it's pretty quick, and it's still usable. not too cryptic like some other wm's can be (especially the system resource friendly ones).

If you hate windows - try "ratpoison".
It's like windows 1.0 - doesn't support overlapping windows
It supports only fullscreen or tiled windows.
