Yep it had excellent kernel. XP was just a skin on it. But either are not good anymore, simply because security vissues due to belevated privileges being always on by for admin users, and it is major pita to run as regular user.

I have mostly only used ubuntu 12.04 and from my experience i liked it once i got it working 100% with my mobile internet. will have to try out 14.04 to see how it compres to 12.04.

Windows 7 is probably the most functional and polished out of the box.

8.1. Easily tweaked to keep the Start menu and go straight to desktop, if you prefer the Win7 feel (like most of us do). Under the hood, it's the best and the latest...other than Linux Mint.

Windows Me is totally warmer and more "real" than Windows 7.

It was just a game which made me upgrade from windows 98 se to windows xp. tht's not going to work this time because i have a xbox 360 as well lol

I just upgraded to W7 from W8.1. It is a great feeling to be back to a smooth, stable OS that actually works without CMD line hacks to restore sleep functionality that are sketchy at best.

I have just upgraded from W7 to W8.1.
Simply disabled all tablet interface (whatever it is called) and use the classic start menu. Now it is hard to see the difference.

It boots up faster and I really -really- like the new task manager.
So far so good but I might just find myself in the honeymoon phase.

Actually, I've been using Win7 Ultimate since it came out, and see no reason to "upgrade." Got Win8 for free, tried it for about a week, and meh. Now, Windows 9, that's gonna rock our world.

I consider win 7 = fixed Vista so no wonder so many votes for 7 - msf had plenty of time to fix their own mess.

I agree that OS shouldn't be bloated in size for no good reason so Win 2K gets my vote.

If msf follows their Vista->Win7 pattern, let's hope next windows (Win9?) is much improved and polished Win8x.

Task manager I'll grant. But, what do you people do that makes Windows 7 so slow to boot up? I can barely get a sip of coffee between POST finishing and seeing the login screen, and unless there were just some major updates, POST takes at least as much time as Windows' booting up. I haven't noticed Windows 8 PCs being faster, at least not by enough to notice.

- not reformatting or defragging for 6 years
- installing and uninstalling things left and right
- upgrading to 7 from Vista accumulating all previous junk
- ancient single-core Celeron
- then suddenly POOF fresh install of Windows 8
- where default cold-boot is replaced with pseudo-boot/hibernate

What? You can manage a sip of coffee during boot? You're fast...

Seriously though, what takes longest on my machine is starting the Intel RAID OROM, that adds a few seconds. Even then I can cold boot to desktop in 5-7 seconds.

Always the first thing I disable when I run into 8 systems. Causes all sorts of weird issues for practically no benefit.
