Your monitor manufacturer probably recommends 1280x1024, but personally I don't like that resolution since it's not a 4:3 ratio and therefore everything looks squished. If you want to run the correct aspect ratio, then do 1280x960. Start at 85Hz refresh rate, and if you still notice flicker, then increase it if the higher refresh rate is supported by your monitor.

1280x1024 @ 85Hz should do the trick. If your monitor is good, you could probably do 1600x1200 @ 85Hz.

what john said

I run 1280X1024 only because I run dual monitors with a 17 inch LCD

I run my 19" at 800 x 600. I prefer the bigger icons and tool bars.

1600x1200 is perfect for a 19inch ... 2048x1536 is too small and usually the monitors don't support a good refresh rate anyhow...

1280x960 is OK ... however Thats the res I prefer run an 17inch monitors ....

my entire freshman year, i ran my viewsonic 19" monitor at 1920x1440. it was glorious. now, since i live with my girlfriend, i have to live with 1280x1024. but i think its a good resolution.

What a great resolution.

I've got a 17" that's running 1152 x 864. Strange numbers, but highest 4:3 ratio I can pull - looks best when you stick w/ that ratio.

That what I use on 19" CRT's also. Any higher and everything looks to small to me except in games.

1280x960 @ 100hz. for games, if my pc can handle it i up the resolution as high as possible as long as text is still readable.

I have the new IIyama Pro 454 19", it'll run 2048x1536x32 @ 80 hz... damn tiny then though, but great for photos.

Usually run 1600 x 1200 x 32 @ 90hz

Super screen all round!

I use 1280x1024x32@75 on my 19" CRT. I know it's a 5:4 res, but it just looks "right", whereas 1280x960 (which is 4:3) doesn't look right. I have a 17" CRT next to the 19", and run that at 1152x864x32@75, and the two look good next to each other, they look like they should be in those resolutions

And both will do 75Hz at those resolutions...if you've got dual monitors, they have to be the same refresh rate!

I prefer 1280x960 with at least 85Hz for Windows and 1024x768 @ 100Hz in games.

I run my 19" screen at 1280x960 @ 85hz and it looks great.

I can't stand 1280x1024..it looks terrible!

I run my 17in LCD at 1280x960 @75Hz, and it looks just right for me. I have a 21in CRT at work that I run 1600x1200 on, and most people that come up to me tell me it's too small for them to be able to see anything. If you have good eyes, and are comfortable running at the higher resolution, I say go for it. For me, I think with your size monitor, 1280x1024 or 1280x960 @ between 75 and 85Hz should be good.
