Hello there,

I recently got the i7-980X and now I am looking for the best motherboard around. Something that would go for long and would be upgradable in the future with a lotta features. I am simply looking for the best one.

Any clue?

Kind regards,
RH

nothing will be upgradeable. socket 1366 is just as dead as every other socket out right now. All new CPU's from both intel and AMD will require new motherboards. So that said you should just look for a board with USB 3 and SATA 3 and then you will have all the latest features and with that 6 core CPU should have a great system for years to come. Asus and Gigabyte and EVGA would be the brands i would look into.

wow to tell you the truth if you bought a 980x you should know about your board before buying such a expensive cpu. State exactly what you would like to do with the computer your building.

thanks man, do u mean to say that these processors are the only one designed on the 1366 socket and all the future processors will be different?

I was looking into the rampage extreme III and the GB UD9, are these the two best on the market, I mean the very best? or is there anything better? I aint much into computers so i dont know much.

Actually I am an Aerospace Engineer and I will basically be running alotta heavy programs which will be producing tons of data. Apart from that I use my computer for basic stuffs, like home entertainment (music, movies..etc) and surfing. A little of of CAD, CATIA, Photoshop and programming too.

I thought that was the dual socket xeon board? doesnt that only work with xeon cpus?

I think you need a x58 board, not a 5520 server board.

what do you guys think of this --> EVGA Classified Super Record 2 (SR-2) Motherboard?

I believe that is a server class motheboard. It supports 2 cpu's. Great option if you plan on running VMware ESXi. Note that this requires a special pc case and memory

Yikes, I don't completely agree with some of the options here. First of all, "best" for what? Gaming? Running virtual machines? Are you making a server? This is a very important question. If gaming is your focus, then you'll probably want something different than someone running ESXi. Personally, I own an ASUS P6T Deluxe and love it. However, there have been some advances made since it came out and for the X58 build I'm working on now, I'm going with the X58 Sabretooth board which is also from ASUS. Call me a fanboy if you want, but I'd go with ASUS anyway you slice it. Anyhow, you can check out the reviews for the Sabretooth on NewEgg...

to tell you the truth i dont know why i waste my time commenting on this thread. The thing why would you spend a 1000+ for a cpu and not know about the specs for the hardware that you need to do your work. Best and most expensive isn't the best route research is what you need my friend.

Some people just like to own the best. You can't condem someone for that. Maybe he got a smokin' hot deal for one or maybe he's got a boat load of money to spend. No matter it is what it is.

In any case my favorite board on this class is the P6X58D Premium. You asked for a recommendation. That's the one I like the best of the three X58 boards I own.
