Visa, MasterCard warn of 'massive' security breach, report says.

Visa and MasterCard warned banks of a potential breach at a US-based credit card processor, the Krebs on Security blog reported Friday. "Sources in the financial sector are calling the breach 'massive' and say it may involve more than 10 million compromised card numbers," Krebs wrote.
Alerts were sent out to US banks late last week advising them that certain cards may have been compromised. The affected US banks reportedly are analyzing data transactions in a bid to track a common point of purchase.
The breach was believed to have occurred between Jan. 21 and Feb. 25.

I had someone sign up for some credit rating service using my BOA card and didn't notice the $19.99 charges for 2 months. Most likely someone I handed it to at a store. 10 minute call got it cleared up and new card mailed. I scratched off the security number to help thwart someone else seeing it.

I got notified last week that my card had been compromised.

When the bank's fraud department called, I assured them that "No, I didn't authorize the expenditure of $3.74 at a B&B in the UK." :biggrin:

(they actually contract with a company to do the "overwatch.")

I check my cards about every 7 - 10 days to see what has been charged. I did find a couple of fraudulent purchases about 4 years ago, but VISA took care of that with one phone call.
