Better Intel Chipset ?

I'm trying to pick out parts for a new system I'm building. I have read really good things about the Intel P35 chipset, but the budget boards (~$100) don't have Raid. The 650i boards offer raid, but I'm not sure how that chipset compairs to the P35.

Anyone want to weight in?

i'm disappointed with the gigabyte 650sli... bought the board due to lots of features and promise of good oc capabilities, but have had problems with stability under oc with a couple cpus and memory types...

i'm about to try another time with this board using a e4500 in it... maybe not having to go over 333 fsb to get full capacity out of the chip will make this board a winner, since a 6350 and a 6750 have not done too well...

If you don't plan on using Nvidia SLI then get the Intel P35, Intel makes the best chipsets.

p35 performs better and is more stable and has less problems, your options are to either get the p35 board and abandon raid since it doesn't do much for system perforamance unless you're doing raid 1, but backing up is a better idea than that.

or spend more on a p35 board with raid **better option.

Thanks for all the replies. I was planning to do raid 0, but I'm not 100%. I'd at least like to have it as an option. I'll take a look at both boards. I have always been more of a Gigabyte guy, so I will probably go that route.

Thanks again to all that replied.

For what it's worth, RAID 0 isn't going to give you a whole lot (basically any) real-world performance gain. (Not with two drives at least...aigmorla has more experience with it than I do, and says he sees a benefit using four drives.) Anandtech has done a few articles on the subject.

I'll have to look up the articles on Raid 0. I've used Raid 5 alot on servers I have built for protection. This was going to be my first attempt at Raid for performance. Maybe I will rethink it. That extra $75-80 saving on the extra hard drive might be better spent on a faster CPU or somthing.

Thanks DSF!

For a home computer, I wouldn't go with RAID, but that's just my opinion. Is there a specific reason you'd like to use it? The reason I ask is that sometimes people think of it as a backup solution, when in fact it isn't.

The way i see it, RAID 0 is more usefull for getting 1 big volume rather than speed. I just cant stand having 6 drive letters to get the capacity....

Computer in my sig:

C: 931GB
D: 1.99TB

Thats why you use raid... (well RAID 5 does give you single drive fault tolerence also)

What's the computer going to be used for? If you're planning on gaming, that $60-70 would be much more effectively put towards the graphics card than a RAID setup.

exactly... you will NOT see $60-70 worth of performance increase from raid-0. spend that money on a larger monitor, better cpu, or better gpu.
