Hi,

I'm looking at these two laptops, and both are exactly the same price(999)

Acer Aspire 5672
# 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo Processor T2300; 2MB L2 cache, 667MHz FSB
# 1GB DDR2 533 SDRAM
# 100GB SATA Hard Drive
# CrystalBrite 15.4" WXGA TFT display with 1280x800 native resolution
# ATI MOBILITY Radeon X1400 graphics card, 128MB DDR
DVD R+-W Drive

ABS G3 Eclipse R70

Windows XP Home
CPU Type AMD Turion64 MT-32(1.8GHz)
Screen 15.4" WXGA
Memory Size 512MB DDR333
Hard Disk 60GB 5400 RPM
Optical Drive Dual-Layer DVD Burner
Graphics Card ATI Mobility Radeon x700
Video Memory 128MB

Which one would be a better choice for gaming?

Or, if you guys know of a better deal, could ya point me to it? thanks in advance!

X700 > X1400, but neither will run modern games very well. Is gaming your primary use? The Core Duo will perform much better in normal Windows tasks than the Core DUo.

Wow, the Core Duo performs better than the Core Duo? Did you mean the Core Duo performs better at normal windows tasks than the Turion?

it's mostly for some light gaming, but I do want it to be able to run Doom 3/HL2/maybe FEAR decently well.

I also configured an ABS Eclipse model for ~1100 dollars with the following upgrades

AMD Turion MT-34(512k cache to 1 mb cache)

1024 DDR333

Do y'all think that's a good deal?

i think you're going to have to spend a little more.

then again that resolution isn't particularly hard to push. much lower res than 1280x1024, which is what CPU tests are run at these days.

check this out for the GPU comparison

HL2 will work fine on the X1400. Dual core is worth much more than the upgrade in the video card IMHO.

I found yet another laptop to consider.

For about 1150 dollars

Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.83 ghz)
1gb DDR533 RAM
ATI Radeon X1600 256mb
40gb HDD
CDRW
No Windows XP included(i have my own copy)

Is that a better deal than the ABS one(Which does have win xp included and a DVD RW)

That's actually a good computer you have there for 1150, especially if you want to game on a somewhat tight budget.

If it is a standard laptop optical drive, you could always upgrade it to a DVDRW drive at a later point.

Acer laptops overheat easily. I tried cs on this model, Acer Ferrari 3000LMi - Athlon XP-M 2500+ 1.86 GHz - RAM : 512 MB - HD : 60 GB - DVD±RW - 802.11b/g, Bluetooth - Win XP Home - 15" TFT 1400 x 1050 ( SXGA+ ), after gaming for three hours in an ac room (70F), it shut off.

That's probably the best so far.

I too have been researching laptops to find a new one for some medium gaming and it looks like we have the same price range. It looks like you are willing to buy a 17" I only wanted a 15". I'd look for a laptop with a x1600 GPU for optimum performance. Depending on what games you want to play the x700 will play most games fairly well. I have seen the x700 in action and it plays games such as Doom3 and HL2 fairly well. Just my thoughts

Just to counter deLouis, I have the Acer TM4404WLMi.
It's basically a Ferrari with only 64MB Vram.
I've done a stage 1 gentoo install on it.
I've played UT2K4 for an hour, and gone directly into Madden 2006 online game with 8 minute quarters(which takes friggin forever) and never had any overheat problems with mine. It gets hot, but not overheat or shutdown.

hey guys,

I ended up buying a laptop from dell, taking advantage of that ridiculous 30% off sale they had.

I ended up getting

Intel Core Duo T2400(1.83 ghz)
1 GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce Go 7900GS 256mb
DVD+-RW
17" screen.

Pretty sweet eh?

note: I got the specs/price for the AMD Turion notebooks from abspc.com and ibuypower.com
and the other intel core duo computer from avadirect.com
