They're both pretty decent.

2000 has more of 98 type look to it, and possibly less DRM crap.

XP has a bit flashier Interface, and at least the version I'm running (Pro), is a bit more involved in setting things up - especially multiple User accounts. This can be good (multiple accounts) if you have kids using the same Computer and you don't want them to (intentionally or accidentaly) install a bunch crap (Spyware, Malware, etc.) on your Machine.

As the five thousand 2000 vs XP threads have concluded: If you like the look of 9x/2000, then use the "Classic" gui with XP but you might as well go with XP because it is better supported, has more features if you choose to use them and has tighter security.

Out of those two, I'd rather go with XP than 2000 if my system was capable of it. However, if gaming wasn't a concern with choosing those OSs I would go linux.

Slow pc ----> Win2000
Semi-new/fast PC ------> WinXP

Overall, WinXP is better for support/drivers.

Absolutely false.

Support for the home user in Windows 2000 is basically dead except for security patches. I doubt seriously if he has the Extended Hotfix Support Agreement with Microsoft for his home computer.

I'm sorry I should have been more clear, however my point is still valid.

Windows XP is NOT in the Extended Support phase like Windows 2000.

It is not basically dead. It is not even close. Extended support offers the exact same main support options that mainstream support does: paid support and security update support. The majority of customers (espeically home users) do not ever need hotfix support, and if they did, they likely would've required it before June 30th.

Compare that level of support with NT4 support, which is for all intents and purposes dead. Unless you have an existing Premier support contract (something no home user has) and have purchased a Custom Support Agreement for NT4 (only available to existing Premier customers, and no longer available), you get absolutely NO support. No security updates (except in very rare cases), no paid support, nothing.

My own vote was for Windows 2000; it's proven stable and drivers aren't an issue unless you're incapable of getting past auto-detect. As for security, I can lock Windows 2000 down just as well as XP. Windows 2000 doesn't have the same flash and fluff that XP does, so home users and gamers may not like it[2000], but there's nothing wrong with it.

I thought about that too, but he asked about Windows 2000 and XP; no need to turn this into *another* holy war.

My vote is for Win2000Pro. It's never let me down and has been rock solid for years now. If I upgrade anything, I'd rather put the money towards a 7800GTX ...........I'm building a new rig in a couple mths anyway and keeping Win 2000 Pro as the Main OS.

When I had Win 2000 pro it was a little bit too slow for me. Windows XP boots up a lot faster and is surprisindly better at most things.
