Better ways of communication than emails?

Hello, I work as a teacher and recently I have been communicating with some of the students through a Facebook group. I thought that this form of communication was way better than the communication by emails we use among the teachers. Emails are great for one-to-one communication but not so much for a group discussion.

I've suggested that we created a Facebook group for the teachers but Facebook is frowned upon by some of the teachers. I've considered g+ but not sure if it offers the right functionality (circles vs groups)

Any suggestions?

All my university classes when I started in 2004 had a forum...

Seriously though if it's communication needed for educational use the school should have something along this line but if it's something to keep in contact with old students then facebook works great for that and make sure you don't post anything you don't want your employers to see or current students to blackmail you with to get easy grades.

Diaspora looks pretty cool. I will check it out. Thanks.

Actually we do have this "learning environment" called Fronter with forums etc. but it is too slow and not very friendly. Also support for mobile devices is very limited.

It shows, that you're not a very good teacher and you've lost communication with students too.
Teacher communicates with students in a classroom. Period.

And, if you look around, people forgot how to communicate IN PERSON.
Everything over the net - forums and texting.

I imagine past Christmas or New Year....Family got together, everyone sat at the table and instead forks and knives in everyones hands - cellphones, all eyes and minds THERE - texting and texting and texting....

I bet, not one family experienced that - many.....

Like I said

Gintaras, I can explain why a facebook group was a good idea for that particular situation but that's not realy what we're discussing here.

Our school is now using google apps (docs) to collaborate. Every student and faculty member had an account created for them. It's a great tool, but the kids just use it to chat in class and share porn pics.

Piazza seems more like a student teacher communication thing. I'm just looking for something the teachers can use to communicate with eachother. Like a Facebook group. It is important that it is fast easy and has mobile support.

Google groups could work but seems a bit dated in terms of layout.

Google docs is just for sharing files right?

You could always use old fashioned IRC. It hardly gets easier, and you should be able to do it cheaply in-house.
