Beware of Yahoo Mail - all my emails gone!

I had this Yahoo Mail account for about 1.5 years. Today I checked it and there's only about 40 emails, from the past 3 days. All my thousands of emails from the last 1.5 years are gone. I know my account was not compromised and I know I didn't delete the mail. I've submitted a request to Yahoo to have a backup of my mail restored, we'll see what happens with that. I'd just like to warn all of you not to trust Yahoo Mail with your email. Apparently there have been lots of troubles with the service since their latest revamp earlier this year.

I still have all of the emails on my android phone, now if I can just figure out a way to export or save them somewhere. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

I just got 50 spam e-mails from Yahoo! as I was reading this. It's a nice even number, too.

Sounds about right. I think half the world's spam gets filtered through my Yahoo mail account. Yahoo is about the worst mail provider around. It's especially inexcusable due to the length of time they've been in the business. You'd think they'd have honed the process by now. Hacked, spammed, and broken; the Yahoo experience...

It's a first time for me. I have had very, very few problems with Spam. I just thought it was ironic that as I was reading about it, I got 50 spam e-mails on my phone.

WTF? I thought I was the only person in this whole world! My account is more than 3 years old and I use it regularly then one day a dozen email is not there! Lesson learnt, forwarded all emails to GMail.
Shame on you Yahoo.

yahoo is my throwaway account. filters are junk and I get more spam on it now than my outlook account, which is pretty impressive.

I realize this is a yahoo thread.. but does any one have recommendations on alternatives? reversly but on the same note i was looking for alternatives because i fear google is becoming to large for its own good. so not only alternative to yahoo but google aswell. i've already switched to -ixquick and -duckduckgo search engine mozilla plugins in palemoon.

I heard of these, really great recommended free secure alternatives... but one apears to be shut down and the other isn't ready(beta stage)
- Lavabit
- StartMail

has anyone been looking around similarly an found any good free alternatives?

openmailbox.org. They're new and run off donations, so their future longevity is in question, but I have no complaints about the service. Consider giving them a few dollars for providing a valuable service. Gratis service gets you spying just about every time. On that note, you could try yandex; Russia's Google. They spy also, but they're Russian. Not as big a deal to most Americans.

Thx, much appreciated even if i don't respond.. just prefer to keep a low post count

..after you mentioned it made me stumble across yandex.dns ,which reminded me that i forgot and never switched off google.public.dns LoL

i never thought about using services from other contries like that, yandex search engine seems to respond and work fine. I will try there DNS as well, as long as it works decent enough i will use it over google, as i forgot about dns and havn't started looking at others for that yet.

I've used the same (2) yahoo email accounts for over 13 years w/o issue. *knocks on wood*. I find all webmail to be junk overall but it's fine for accounts where you don't want them tied to more personal email and 99% of the spam gets filtered out....so not sure what some of you are talking about...

They still haven't restored anything, or sent me any message about it. I'll try submitting the request again, but i don't have much hope of getting my emails back.

Good time to start using a mail client so you'll have all your mail if it happens again.

For the phone, maybe you can use its database in a desktop client. copy it over, and import it.

I get just as much spam on my gmail account, actually more, as I do on my Yahoo! account.

Switching to Gmail is certainly nothing more than a knee jerk reaction. If it had happened to Gmail, then everyone would be piling on saying "Should switch to Outlook".

Anyone that truly depends on any single someone or something else for archival storage is an idiot. If you want to keep it, make sure you have it forwarded to another service altogether and keep duplicate copies or get a mail client and store it locally, too.

Good news, their restore worked. Got my emails back.

We've finished restoring your inbox

Thanks for your patience during this process. The good news is that your messages have been restored to your inbox! Some emails may be labeled with the time of recovery instead of when they were sent, but you can check the full email header for the original date and time.

The problem with that is that stuff like that doesn't happen on Gmail.
