outpost.com has lowered the price to $54.99 (normally $69.99), shipping is around $5, and there is a $20 rebate, so your price should be around $40. not bad ... !

I'd jump on this, except I've already given up on beyondtv and am using MediaPortal(open source rules). Now that we're on the subject, GotAllMedia(once again, open source) looks like it will turn out nicely....once it gets out of the beta.

Is Media Portal for Windows or Linux?

damn, MediaPortal looks great! wish i'd known about it before placing my order for btv. oh, well, i'll have to give it a try - maybe i can return btv unopened.

I'm testing gb-pvr on my 250 card with a p-600 overclocked. Its a little buggy still but close to great. Maybe I'll check these others out or just try btv if my hardware will handle it.

I like BTV for its ease of setup and use. MediaPortal was a big PITA for setup. XMLTV isnt easy to set up, friggin MythTV was easier and thats linux!

Beyond TV is so simple, and it uses 2 tuners now. Plus it will stream video across the network. My BeyondTV box is in the living room, and I can watch Live TV in the comptuer room, via the live video stream. I can even change channels in here

MediaPortal would be nice if I wasnt spoiled tho

I have to admit, GotAllMedia and MediaPortal are a pain to set up, but when you get them working, you get so much more than just a tv program, and they're free.

GB-PVR is fantastic. I've used it for a month with my Hauppauge 150 and Comcast Digital Cable. Highly recommend it for ease of use, fast support, and great UI.

Sort of off topic, but does anyone here use a setup like this with satellite rather than cable? I tried splitting my satellite feed after the output on my satellite box, but was unable to get my card (AIW 8500) to display any video.

Haven't had much time to tinker with it, but hoping to gain some direction from those who have done so with success.

with satellite, I'd have to recommend getting a bundle with the software and a Ir control for the satellite box. I know BT has some type of bundle like that, I've also seen a few others around.

does anything but BT allow me to watch live tv over my home network / internet? I have sage installed, but never really got around to setting it up. also have media portal on there. i still havent found anything that looks as good or runs without trouble like the stock software.
Eventually im gonna build a Myth box... (assuming i can stream live tv to a windows machine on the home network)

if this is the only software that can do it, im gonna jump on it.

Thanks, I'll do a bit of research at the sites mentioned above as well.

boy this is a tough call. i downloaded gbpvr and it's pretty nice - interface looks good, setup was easy, way more features than btv - i really like the comics plugin! my only complaints are that it isn't quite as robust in the options it gives you record shows as btv, and requires some not-too-obvious key combos to perform some functions. i assume it'll be easy to use with my hauppauge remote tho. in one important area it beats btv hands down - it's way faster! it drives me nuts how long it takes btv to load and exit, and how long it takes to start viewing tv. gbpvr is instantaneous. i'd really like to know why the heck btv is so slow.

so, here's the comparison:
btv, looks great, great tv guide, great control of recording, but slow and not free
gbpvr, not quite as pretty, but more features and fast and FREE!

think i'll try media portal ...

i'd really like to know why the heck btv is so slow.

i run it on a xp2000+ / 1gig ram rig running xp sp2.

It only takes like 3-5 seconds to start and shut down...

Since mine is running on a dedicated HTPC with wireless card, I never shut btv off except when i do windows updates and have to reboot, so I have no wait time.

when btv starts, it starts its own web server and also a service monitor to restart critical services if they fail. It also connects to home to verify product key I believe, not to mention it connects to snapstream.net to check to see if you scheduled any remote recordings. Then if you have firefly remote, that service starts. I also believe the beyond media light service starts so you can browse and play pictures, music and video files on the tv.

I've never tried the other one so i don't know how fast it is, but btv doesn't seem slow at all to me.

Does anyone know a good MPEG-2 video editor to use to edit BTV recordings?

I want to cut commercials and make DVD's of certain recorded shows.

search the btv forums, some guy made a utility that uses the smartchapter files and cuts out commercials for you. I don't remember the name
