OMG, can I take my last statement back? I went into a couple games with 1600 x 1200 and saw how frickin beautiful it looked. Now I'm having second thoughts lol.

FPS hovers between 20-30 (why does the console fps command have two numbers?)

It's playable but not completely smooth...

Your local X800XL price is high. Mail-order price is $280 shipped for ATI brand.

My "P3600" / "R9700" / 1GB / Audigy combo allows for high audio & medium video settings (except lights & shadows) & 2xAA @ 1280x960 in the demo. I have not bothered messin' with the settings much until I get the full game (waiting on patches).

So, if the 2500+ is not a limiting factor then an oc'ed 9800 should be better (less software audio... so maybe that and the CPU evens it out?).

But, as you say prolly neither the X800 nor 6800 will allow 1600x1200 so increasing viddy settings would not be so beneficial if scaling up but you might play centered @ 960 with high settings on the equivalent of 16" if a 20" panel. If so, and the panel lacks such options, NVIDIA is the way to go for driver scaling options.

dude you are fine. Just run at 800x600 and there shouldnt be any pixel interpolation since its exactly 1/4 the area. You will probably be able to turn on some eye candy too!

Save your money until you get do the whole A64 processor, mobo, gpu,ram upgrade.

Just curious how much better 2GB is compared to 1GB on BF2?

Apparently it reduces the stuttering, freezing, & other problems many people are getting. From what I read in one place someone bumped up to 2gb and all their problems went away.

I crash quite often with 2gb of Ram. Currently using a P4 system, hyperthreading disabled (that fixed about half of the crashes)..,. not o/c'd.

*UPDATE* 7/14: got a stick of 1GB Corsair VS, things are A LOT smoother now. 1GB is definitely not enough for BF2 unless you want to run at low settings.

After 5 hours of playing (where tf did the time go?) I'm back to report... the hitching is gone! Did not affect my frame rates (still 70avg), but there's no skipping anymore. That said, I did get this new error message a couple times: There is a problem with your network connection... it would freeze up completely for a split second. anyone know what that's about? Do I need to fill it with 2gb?

Conclusion: 1.5gb ram >>>>>> 1.0gb (for these settings: 1024x768, light & shadows to low, everything else medium. 2x AA)
