Has anyone noticed a slowdown in battlefield 2 during artillery bombing? Just running around, my framerate is typically 80-100+ fps, but when my area is getting bombed by artillery, I can see the rate drop as low as 25fps. I have an a64 4000+ san diego, 2gb ram, 74gb raptor 10k, 2x bfg 7800gtx oc running 1920x1200 4xaa 16x af.

I'm guessing it's either your processor that might be slowing down your video cards..? My friend was running BF2 with a Nvidia 5200...the game wouldn't even boot up even though it's optimized for Nvidia..

I have noticed that too, but I have a 6600GT so I don't know if I can really compare with you.

Drop the resolution to 1600x1200 and see if the same thing happens.

at 1900x1200 with 4x8x i would think that even your system would slow down at certain times during gaming.

Such high end specs for a game machine other than the conspicuous lack of hardware audio is criminal. Criminal, I say.

I get it no matter what I have the resolution/image settings at on my 6800GT running at 1280x1024. I wonder if it's just the internet/server lag? I'd imagine all that artillery flying everywhere would be hell. Or it's just your processor. Don't think you can get any better than what you got though

Optomization has nothing to do with it, the FX5200 doesnt meet the min requirements.

It clearly says on the box FX5700 or higher.

I too run at 1920x1200 4xAA/16xAF, but have just one 7800GTX. It slows down, but not to 25 I dont think. There is a lot of explosions, smoke and dust, which seem to really put a strain on a video card. Guess you're going to have to live with it.. or turn down some settings.

You don't watercool that BFG do you? Cause it has a cold bug!

New beta drivers (due out today) fix that bug.

I didn't give the complete specs of the system... I do have hardware audio, but only an sb live audigy 2, nothing too special. All the cooling is stock, a total of 7 fans in the case I believe, including the hoss fan in the silverstone 650w ps, that thing is LOUD. During intense combat it may dip to 50fps for a little while, but the biggest slowdown is with the artillery strikes. It could be all the smoke and explosions that they generate with the aa and af and trying to smooth out the smoke, no idea? I'll try sli 16x aa when I get home.

Ah so. However, while the Live! 24-bit does sport an Audigy DSP, it has been artificially crippled (as its forerunner the LS) at the driver level to exclude HWA of EAX. Perhaps modifying an A2 setup with a compatability patcher could circumvent that.

Is 16x AA an in-game option using SLI? Otherwise I think only 2x and 4x exist for NVIDIA and additionally 6x for ATI. Similarly, AF seems limited to 4x by the Texture Filtering option. I notice that forcing higher via driver settings does affect the image however the AF still looks awful with a distinct and too near edge beyond which all is blurry. I don't recall if it was one or the other or both but when I forced AA & AF to highest settings (also tried game settings at ultra-high just to see how good it could look) there was a weird glitch while flying over water -sort of like a shadow which covered half the visible surface. So, it may be best to leave AA & AF driver settings at application preference. What say you?

I saw a post about a similar issue on Planetbattlefield technical forums where FPS would randomly drop to 15fps - the common thread betwwen all the posters was the Audigy 2 soundcard!

I was also getting slowdowns to 15fps on my ATI RS480 based Shuttle PC that I could never solve with either a 7800GTX or X800XL . Coincidentally this same Shuttle PC had my SB audigy 2 card installed! I never had any problems with large framerate drops in BF2 on my SLI rig or my NF4 based Shuttle but neither had the SB Audigy 2 installed....

I was so frustrated with this BF2 slowdown issue that I finally replaced the ATI RS480 (ST20G5) Shuttle with an NF3 based Shuttle (SN95G5 V3) and have not experienced the problem anymore. So if the Audigy 2 is the culprit perhaps it is an issue primarily with PCI-E based graphics chip sets working in conjunction with the Audigy 2?

I suppose I could try removing the audigy 2 and just using the onboard sound of the motherboard. As far as Auric goes, I'm not using 16xaa but 4xaa, 16xaf which are both in the nvidia control panel. I don't use the bf2 control panel for video settings, as they don't have 1920x1200, so if I were to make aa and af application-controlled, by setting it, I would lose the resolution (I specifiy it at command line). I haven't played enough with the new drivers yesterday to see if they make any difference, but I did post in another thread about the sli aa being too slow to play at this res. The supersampling setting is fixed, the fences are now rendered correctly.
