We dont know what the settings do to CPU/GPU usage yet.. FB2 if according to the release videos is a lot more advanced, in terms of model animation (CPU intensive), physics (very CPU intensive) and world destruction (very CPU intensive).

I have the Q9400, at stock it was bottlenecked in BC2, at 1080p. Overclocking it helps a lot.

well looks like that is the answer.
looks like its time to upgrade your pc

im not sure if this describes it well, but there is a big difference between the trailers and this video. it looks very... dry
looks like it has a lot of potential though

I'm eager to see how my X4 965 @ 4.1GHz with dual HD 5850s does in BF3... can't wait!

got an invite to the bf3 alpha test  :whiste:

wo, does fb2.0 eat my graphics!

running 5850, q9400, 4gb, ssd

backed away from high details 1920x1200, ALL the way down to settled...wait for it, 1400x900 on low details!

OMG, time to go shopping..looked at one "superclocked" 570 which was a MASSIVE 12mhz over the 785mhz stock! lol

..is it worth spending extra on a 'clocked' 570 or stick to a basic one, do some basic oc'ing meshelf and pocket the extra? (oc'ing the 5850 to 800/1200 with afterburner did some good, but oc-ing never does much!)
try looking into Palit GTX 570 Sonic Platinum, it has a very good cooler and overclocks well..

It looks great. Notice how there is almost no distance scaling of the environment? That's why. It looks fantastic.

I was having problems with zooming in with the sniper rifle and having pop-in. I would see somebody running, zoom in and have a wall pop in where I can't shoot through.

It really doesn't look that good, sort of unstable, unfinished animations and other issues. To me it was like a buggy version of BC2. When you shot water you didn't even get a splash.

I expected this though. It was an Alpha version of a game and I expected it to be unfinished. I also expected it to not be updated at all because it was strictly for testing purposes.

I am confident that the final game will be of very high quality and have not cancled my pre-order due to my experience with the Alpha.

It's a good looking game. Even for alpha. It's no Crysis, but it looks pretty good to me, gameplay is nice as well, have enjoyed the alpha.

Certainly is a far sight better than the latest COD part 23458.

I do think it is your CPU. Try overclocking it and see if it helps.
i'm not a massive fan of oc-ing, it never adds much more than 10%, prefer fundamental new tech upgrades

leaning more now towards the core i5-2500 upgrade first, thanks for your feedback

For those playing alpha, how much better looking is it than BC2?
it's definitely better, more than a few comments that it felt more like bc3 than bf3, but that would be hard to avoid really..

my conclusion was that i don't think it's bad enough not to buy and play, i really enjoyed it and hopefully the beta is more refined. i stuck my neck out and said that i thought it would be a good game and i think it will be (i've played the bf franchise since the first wake island demo, absolutely love the game..)

the alpha test map was a too short timed rush map with 4 separate sections, but we hardly ever got to see the 3rd section let alone the 4th!

interestingly there was massive support for a reintroduction of the bf2 command rose, which i voted for, it's a bit late for that now, i guess dice could in theory add it later, check this mock up graphic:

Anyway, most folks around here know that a q9400 would badly bottleneck an HD5850 in BC2, so it doesn't take much of a leap of faith to make the same conclusion about BF3.

actually i didn't find that with my setup..sure 1 core was bumping up against max and the load balancing was pretty dreadful, but what with the gpu being average 70-80% used bc2 runs fine

I ran the Alpha on a P55 classified 200 with a i7 870 with a GTX 460 with setting on high no problems.. but, on my main system which is a ASUS P8P67 Pro, 2600k @4.5, and GTX 580 I had excellent performance. I was going to buy another GTX 580 but, I feel it would be overkill...

Actually you've just confirmed exactly what I suspected. You're cpu-bottlenecked in bc2 (and by extension are in bf3).

On my i7 system, the cpu monitor generally looks the same, with one maxed thread, but the others are much lower than yours. And more importantly my hd5850 is always, and I really do mean always, pegged at 99%. If yours is at 80%, it's hardly being stressed.

Battlefield seems to be a hybrid...it needs multiple cores, but also one fast thread for its main game engine. That's the thread that you just don't have with your q9400.

P. S. You can use the multiquote option to quote multiple messages in one reply post.

Depends on what you are running. For instance my Asus Matrix GTX 580 runs at 970Mhz core, which is 16% more than it's stock clocks and 20% more than a regular GTX580's stock clock of 772. Performance for it scale pretty just about parallel to the clock speed increases. This OC does allow for increased gaming experience in some games.

However, generally on average, yeah 10% is about the max you might gain. And if you are having frame rate issues, going from lets say 25fps to 28fps average, does little to improve the gameplay experience.
