I've been milking my game on my olde PC for as long as possible. Recently I found Origin crashing whenever I try to go into the game menu. I got around this by opening the exe file directly on the C drive. But as of tonight its not allowing access to the EA servers at all. First time that's happened to me.
Is it finally not supported by EA and no way to play now?

If your game is crashing disable all GPU overclocking overlays (eg msi afterburner, EVGA precision) and disable the origin in game option. It adds an overlay which can cause crashes at times, it's the "origin in game" option. I am speaking strictly of the onscreen display overlays. Those can cause crashes with certain system configurations - I have to disable the OSD for all assassin's creed games or I can't alt-tab without crashing. The game should work fine, it works for me.

Just tried that, and it indeed fixes the origin menu problem, but still cant play. Get "failed to connect to EA online" when I hit "multiplayer" menu button.
Must be a local server issue (I'm in Japan) if it works OK for you. Hopefully it will come up again.

It was dead to me a long time ago due to the same such errors. It's a shame...I really like BFBC2: Vietnam.

BF3 is about as fun as Call of Duty Modern Warfare (1/2/3/4) is. It's not much like BC2 or BF2; BC2 was more console feeling, BF2 was more skill-based than BF3. You need premium edition or else I'd say it isn't worth playing. As far as stability, it's pretty fluid and I had very little issues when I did play getting it to work correctly.

I really wish they would release Bad Company for free. I know they won't as it would kill BF3, but Vietnam was SUCH a good DLC. Too bad its around 10$.

Well thats your opinion, now heres mine.

I ran a CoD4 server for years and BF3 is absolutely nothing like CoD, not even if you play it in TDM mode.

Agree BF3 is not really like BF2 either.

BF3 is more like BFBC2 than any other game I can think of. I thought BFBC2 was pretty good and put around 100 hours into it. I love BF3 and so far have over 760 hours into it and continue to play it almost daily.

Edit: yes, it is very stable

I really enjoyed BC2 and BC2:V. I miss the trace darts, but I don't think I can go back to not being able the strafe while running.

I actually prefer a lot of aspects of BC2 over BF3. BF3 is a great game, but I think I had more fun with BC2.

I've played most of the bf games since the original Vietnam. I felt they all generaly improved as they went along, and I got amazing value from them. With the following exceptions:
-getting rid of hit music, and the ability to add your own soundtrack ingame, from Vietnam. Playing real music from chopper or jeep was awesome. Cocky players could play it like the red Barron painted the circus.
-torching automatic teamspeak from bf2. Added so much to the game. Really missed it.
-shrinking servers to 32max in bfbc2.
-more of a preference really, but I prefer nice epic beautiful scenery like beaches and tropical jungle, to crawling through garbage piles with flies. Feel like I'm on vacation I guess.

Other than that, many many amazing improvements. Haven't played bf3 very much to know if there are many improvements over bfbc2, other than the typical graphics engines etc.

I'm pretty picky about games, don't play anything but bf anymore.

I said it was more enjoyable, I never once said they were similar in any way. Secondly, what does running a server have to do with anything? I've played the COD series since the first game, and the battlefield series since BF1942 so I can see how the two franchises are becoming more similar each game. The battlefield series started the console porting way later than COD. Bad Company was SUPPOSED to be their dedicated console battlefield title, but I guess they decided to milk Bad Company dry and leave it for dead. I remember doing alpha NDA testing for BC2 and being saddened it was going to be on PC.

BF3 took an obvious turn towards console users over BF2; more money in two releases of one product.

Some people just don't like others trashing BF3 and don't understand why they can't like it. I'm not one of those people.

I've played the battlefield series since 1942 (with all the mods to boot, DC and Galactic Conquest were AMAZING), Didn't like Vietnam, Spent 1000 Hours in BF2 and was an admin on on of the top (sub #6) servers in the world...FullContactWar. LOVED that game and couldn't get enough. Spent 250 hours in BC2 before I got sick of it and uninstalled...it just wasn't the same and missed jet fighting. BF3 was just DICE taking a huge dump on my face. WTF is this shit? Jets are tuned more towards keyboard/gamepad users? Wtf? Joysticks don't allow you to brake in a jet? WTF is that shit? I spent about 40 hours in game and ultimately uninstalled a week or so after BTK came out.

Battlefield isn't really Battlefield as it isn't true to it's name anymore like it was in the past. A battlefield of all the different units working towards obtaining an objective. Hell, throw an aircraft carrier and submarine in there, sure! BF3/BC2 were all about rank progression and weapon upgrade unlocks...that's it. COD does the same thing but with perks.

I'm 250ish hours into RO2 and am having a blast...even if I am an old school Battlefield "elitist".

I think I mostly enjoyed BC2 because of the premise it had for BF3....I thought it would be just like BF2 with better graphics and destructible buildings. Nope, even though DICE told us PC were the "main focus" of BF3 they ended up going back on their word and catering to the consoles once again.

GG Dice. I Miss you Battlefield <3

Same here. I think BF3 is really great, especially when you get some good teams and squads, it can be awesome, but ultimately I had more fun in Bad Company 2. I might fire it up again and see if anyone is still playing.

Pretty much this. There was a lot of potential for BF3, but they went and fucked it for the consoles. I'm hoping BF4 goes back in the right direction since the new consoles will be closer to PC power, but I doubt it.

I just logged in and there are many full servers. It's still "supported" by EA.
I logged in through Origin with no issues.

Ive played em all too. As I said I was just stating my opinion, dont get your feathers all ruffled. I mentioned the server to let people know I had invested some time and money into the CoD series wasnt just some BF fanboi. BTW, I also had a BF3 server for 6 months but there was just too much competition and I didnt have the time to put into really getting it going. (And no that doesnt have jack to do with anything either, just thought Id throw that in there.)

Other than finally adding the ability to strafe run I dont see a whole lot of CoD'ishness added to BF3. I hear that stuff all the time but I just dont see it.

They did away with the commander thing from BF2 which I consider a good thing. IMO RTS elements have no business in a FPS game, I hate that crap and Treyarch went the other direction and put some RTS missions in Black Ops2. bleh

Good post. I switched over to RO2 but the game itself has a few bugs that make it annoying. Artillery spam in that game is beyond annoying, too.

I played a fair bit about launch but drifted off, and the articles about how easy and prevalent cheating is have kept me from firing it up again since.

Are hacks still everywhere?

Hacks are in just about every PC game. The last 5 games I've played sans Sim City 5 had hacks (or bots for MMOs) available. Red Orchestra 2, Planetside 2, Arma 2/3, etc.

BF3 had hackers still, but just join any popular server and the admins will handle it. I'm sure EA has also banned quite a few people since release by now.

At one point a few months after release the game was nearly overrun with hackers but they really have cut them down drastically. As with all PC games Im sure there are still cheaters out there but I havent seen any blatant hacks in a long time. They may still gather in the Metro meatgrinder servers but I havent played those kinds of games in ages. I mainly play Conquest on the larger maps or if Im short on time Ill jump into a hardcore TDM server for a quick fix.

Servers came back up ok the next day here in Japan.
When the ea servers go down for bfbc2, do they also go down for bf3?

Nope! BF3 uses a completely different server setup than BC2. I think even BC is still running. Closing servers for games right now would just be kicking sand on EA's already tarnished reputation, so I highly doubt we'll see the servers get shut down permanently any time soon.

BFBC2 always felt like a stopgap game for me, something to tide people until BF3. It felt to me as less substantial than even BF2

I put so many more hours into BC2 than I did BF3. I kind of want to go back and play more BF3 though now that I'm thinking about it. Sadly my videocard recently died and I have been using a cheapo card. I should really just buy a new card.
